CD Review: Scott Spark – Kathleen EP

Review by: Lana Harris

scottspark-kathleen   Celestes are not only a group of divine girls but also the name given to a small set of orchestral bells played via a keyboard mechanism. Typically used in orchestras, the use of one in a pop song suggests a performer who knows his keys – and Scott Spark is a man who knows his keys. His second EP release, Kathleen, credits five different types of keyboard instruments, including the Celeste and a toy piano – imagine what this man’s music room must look like! The sounds generated by Spark are explored within the boundaries of indie pop, with unique touches added by his technical piano abilities and the gathering of a wide variety of instruments and performers to round out his music.

The title track, ‘Kathleen’ is a somewhat remorseful reflection on a lost relationship, full of keys, casio beats, and ending with rhythmic handclaps. Despite the lyrical content, the instruments work to produce a song whose tone is upbeat. The female echoing vocals are a nice touch and add a beautiful sense of harmony. Despite the wide range of performers and instruments, none of the tracks from the EP feels cluttered or complex. Sounds are used sparingly in just the right spots, suggesting Spark has put a lot of thought into the arrangement of the songs.

‘Kathleen’ and ‘Sole Trader’ are both solid pop songs, ditties that would make a delightful soundtrack to sipping classy 1930’s cocktails whilst sprawled on velvet-upholstered couches in a piano bar. The others two tracks on the EP have deeper, more swelling tones. They feel more intimate, personal and ruminative, although there are elements of this introspection on the more buoyant tracks too. Spark’s lyrics are wistful and dreamy, with observations about emotions and relationships interwoven with surreal images – the title of the track ‘Rabbit to an Orchid’ is a good example of the latter.

Scott Spark’s masterful use of a variety of instruments plus his ability to draw to himself performers that can augment his vision should see his circle of influence grow.
