CD Review: Ash Grunwald – Live at the Fly by Night

Ash Grunwald has a new live band. He’s recently ditched his kit playing drummers and instead adopted a man who plays a car door with a hammer and an African percussionist. The resulting harmonies of this new musical collaboration are compiled on Grunwald’s latest release Live at the Fly by Night – a full length recording of a show played by the trio at a Fremantle pub late last year. Unlike a lot of live albums which are a compilation of tracks played across many tour venues, this is just one show, and is the second release of this type that Grunwald has produced (Live at the Corner was released in 2008). |
The album opens with a wash of pre show noise and slowly building hand drumming that arcs up to a crescendo when Grunwald’s pipes are unleashed, his part African heritage evident in the resonance of his voice. If you’ve not heard Grunwald before, he’s a blues styled man. His vocal style on Live at the Fly by Night conveys emotion and soul in the tradition of great men such as Tom Waits, although on this recording his soul is a hippy’s jubilant run through the forest, rather than a wallow in a darkened mind swamp. The soulful singing and up-tempo beats are best represented on ‘Fish out of Water’ which sounds like John Butler jamming with Waits on a whisky soaked hotel balcony late on a summer’s eve. The depth and range of Grunwald’s singing on ‘Rosie’, where his voice soars and growls without the distraction of accompanying melody and just a spatter of soft drumming behind, it is one of the album’s finest moments.
Throughout the journey a range of percussion instruments are called upon to support Grunwald’s voice, including woodskin cajon, djembes, and the eccentric car door and hammer. The focus is clearly on rhythm – alongside the percussion, the guitar melodies played are often a series of repeated phrases. The drumming, which is more loose and inspired, feels fresh amongst the tighter repetitive melodies.
Lyrics are often repeated as well, with changes in tempo driving the songs to climaxes. The style of pace change is repeated through many of the tracks, which lends a sameness to the tunes once you’ve listened to the whole album a few times through.
Live at the Fly by Night brings funk to the blues, and the resultant combination is a highly danceable recording with sustained vocal interest. The recording boasts a commitment to energetic music, which can’t be said of too many blues based recordings, and gives Grunwald a unique sound. An album to put on when you want to encourage people to get up and dance at a party.

Susan Boyle and Owl City top charts for another week as The McClymonts make a bold charge at the album chart on debut…
Chalking up a fourth consecutive week at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart is Owl City with their smash hit “Fireflies”, accruing five weeks straight on top of the ARIA Digital Track Chart at the same time. Susan Boyle continues to break chart records in Australia and overseas, with “I Dreamed A Dream” holding at the pinnacle of the ARIA Album Chart for the ninth consecutive week. Boyle this week matches P!nk’s mammoth album “Funhouse”, which held down the No.1 spot for nine weeks running in November/December 2008.
Ke$ha claims two ARIA Singles Chart top 5 singles this week, with “Tik Tok” holding at #2 for the fourth week running and “Blah Blah Blah” moving from #7 to 4. Iyaz, who was discovered by Sean Kingston through his Myspace page, continues his chart assault, climbing three spots to #3 with “Replay”. The Black Eyed Peas meanwhile continue to impact the singles chart, with “Rock That Body” up four spots to #8 and “Meet Me Halfway” and “I Gotta Feeling” sitting at #22 and 23 respectively. “Rock That Body” is the fourth single to hit the top 10 from their current album “The E.N.D.”, which spawned three number one singles through 2009. “Memories” from David Guetta (featuring Kid Cudi) jumps seven spots to #17, as Jay Sean’s “Do You Remember?” blasts up a huge eleven spots to #18. Currently in Australia with the travelling Big Day Out festival, Muse shoot from #34 to 25 with “Undisclosed Desires”, Timbaland (featuring Nelly Furtado & SoShy) moves eight spots to #28 with “Morning After Dark” and Vanessa Amorosi’s “Hazardous” scores a #29 debut.

Reaching the ARIA Singles Chart top 40 for the first time this week is ARIA Award-winning Sia, with “You’ve Changed” entering at #31. Also claiming top 40 debuts are the tracks “I Like That” from Richard Vission (featuring Luciana & Static Revenger) at #35 and Sam Clark’s “Broken” just below at #39.
Following country music’s night of nights in Tamworth on Saturday, Golden Guitar winners The McClymonts swoop on the ARIA Album Chart #2 position with their new album “Wrapped Up Good”. Obliterating their previous chart peak of #37 with 2007’s “Chaos & Bright Lights”, “Wrapped Up Good” becomes the first Australian release to hit the top 5 this year. Michael Buble’s “Crazy Love” holds at #3 this week, as the self-titled album from touring super-group Them Crooked Vultures climbs five spots to round out the top 10 for the first time. Muse’s “The Resistance” jumps from #25 to 15, the soundtrack from Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel blasts a huge fourteen spots up the chart to #22, and Owl City’s “Ocean Eyes” claims a #25 debut. Featuring songs from Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy and Ernie Dingo, the soundtrack to local film Bran Nue Dae enters at #29. Also debuting is “Summer” from The Sunny Cowgirls, which comes in at #33.

Dirty Three replace Echo and the Bunnymen at Brisbane Laneway; Sydney Echo gig rescheduled
Due to unforeseen circumstances, UK outfit ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN will be replaced by Melbourne deities THE DIRTY THREE at the Brisbane Laneway Festival event this Friday.
The same circumstances force the band to reschedule tonight’s Sydney performance at the Enmore Theatre to Tuesday 2 February at the Metro Theatre.
Patrons holding tickets for the Enmore Theatre show will be granted access with their current tickets, those requiring a refund can arrange this by contacting their point of purchase.

LMM: So whats ‘Kid Sam‘ up to?
KR: ‘We have a couple of weeks off now and then Laneway (Laneway Festival), which should be really awesome, the lineup is fantastic with a really strong Australian contingent! I’m looking forward to Dirty Three, Oh Murphy?, and Philadelphia Grand Jury again. We’ve done a tour with them already. Yeah, so it’s great. Then comes the Daniel Johnston gigs which we’re like, hugely, hugely excited about!
