One of the most beautiful things about music is that you don’t need to speak a specific language to appreciate it. There are thousands of artists that don’t speak a word of English, but still manage to have ability to transcend the language barrier and deliver their musical message.

Tonight’s entire offerings were sung completely in a language other then English. The fact that most of the audience did not understand a single word of what was being said was not a deterrent for everyone to have an absolutely enjoyable night.

Chalking up a fourth consecutive week at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart is Owl City with their smash hit “Fireflies”, accruing five weeks straight on top of the ARIA Digital Track Chart at the same time. Susan Boyle continues to break chart records in Australia and overseas, with “I Dreamed A Dream” holding at the pinnacle of the ARIA Album Chart for the ninth consecutive week. Boyle this week matches P!nk’s mammoth album “Funhouse”, which held down the No.1 spot for nine weeks running in November/December 2008.

Ke$ha claims two ARIA Singles Chart top 5 singles this week, with “Tik Tok” holding at #2 for the fourth week running and “Blah Blah Blah” moving from #7 to 4. Iyaz, who was discovered by Sean Kingston through his Myspace page, continues his chart assault, climbing three spots to #3 with “Replay”. The Black Eyed Peas meanwhile continue to impact the singles chart, with “Rock That Body” up four spots to #8 and “Meet Me Halfway” and “I Gotta Feeling” sitting at #22 and 23 respectively. “Rock That Body” is the fourth single to hit the top 10 from their current album “The E.N.D.”, which spawned three number one singles through 2009. “Memories” from David Guetta (featuring Kid Cudi) jumps seven spots to #17, as Jay Sean’s “Do You Remember?” blasts up a huge eleven spots to #18. Currently in Australia with the travelling Big Day Out festival, Muse shoot from #34 to 25 with “Undisclosed Desires”, Timbaland (featuring Nelly Furtado & SoShy) moves eight spots to #28 with “Morning After Dark” and Vanessa Amorosi’s “Hazardous” scores a #29 debut.

Obliterating their previous chart peak of #37 with 2007’s “Chaos & Bright Lights”, “Wrapped Up Good” becomes the first Australian release to hit the top 5 this year. The Mars Volta

The Tivoli is filling with fans and the ambient strains of lounge jazz. Bodies crowd the railings upstairs first, spectators safe behind the iron and wood. As more people push through the doors the floor packs out, the main crowds are drawn towards the stage, towards the backdrop of snake and other eyes, wings and amorphous canine face shapes, lit by blasts of ketchup red from above. Excited chatter now drowns out the background melodies, until The Mars Volta hit the stage…. READ the FULL SHOW REVIEW HERE

Review: BIG DAY OUT Gold Coast 2010 – BDO

Review: Hannah Collins

BDO
[Archive Photo: Stuart Blythe]
An introduction to BIG DAY OUT out need not be overdone. We can outline the usual journey to the venue, the mass of colourful crowds milling around the stages and the blistering heat of the scorching Australian summer, complimenting those in their BDO attire. With all of the following making continual appearances, Mexican hats, BDO coolers and an array of prominent band shirts, BDO 2010 marked the beginning of a new decade of international music in superbly fine form.

Kicking off the Australian BDO roller coaster, that will set up tents in near every capital city in the country and twice in Sydney this year, the leg begins with a line up of mammoth proportions at one of the only places that surf lifestyle, trip hop beats, ghetto tricks and divine diva’s meet our very own rock and roll sub culture.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre headline Australian Tour – February 2010

To celebrate the release of Who Killed Sergeant Pepper, the Brian Jonestown Massacre have announced they will be heading to Australia in 2010. With the addition of Matt Hollywood, this is as close to the original line up as we are ever going to see on stage.

Recorded across 2009 between Iceland & Berlin, the Brian Jonestown Massacre move forward with their new full length album , Who Killed Sergeant Pepper?”.

Working with musicians of the likes of Will Carruthers (ex Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized), Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir (who recorded vocals on the last BJM album) & Felix from the Russian band Amazing Electronic Talking Cave and various musicians from France, Germany, & Iceland, this is BJM’s most multi-cultured and inspired release to date.

13 tracks ranging from ambient bhangra beats, to rock, to shoe gaze, to the gypsy influences of Eastern Europe and then back again to the swirling psychedelic sound that has won the band a devoted legion of followers around the globe, Who Killed Sergeant Pepper is a high water mark in a career full of brilliant releases.

Australian fans will not only be the first territory to receive the album, but will also receive the bonus EP ‘One’ with their copy of the album.
