Tim Barry @ Rosies, Brisbane – 02 April 2011 w/ Wollard and Burns, Jud Campbell [Live Review]

Review by: Stephen Goodwin

Some invisible barrier seems to prevent punters from encroaching closer than five metres from where local Jud Campbell is punching out a solid set of folk-punk. Maybe he has cooties, because a little later everyone is crowding the stage’s edge as if to hear every muted note and whispered vocal in Wollard and Burns’ back-porch set.

Stage’s edge is still too distant for Tim Barry. Early on, the American drops the lead from his acoustic and plays unplugged amidst the crowd, harnessing their enthusiasm for a sing-along full of roaring voices and grinning faces.

Artist applications open for Woodford Folk Festival 2011/12

WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL OPENS EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR ARTISTS

Expressions of interest are now open to Artists and Presenters for the 26th Woodford Folk Festival. Held annually between the 27th December and 1st January, the Woodford Folk Festival is one of Australia’s largest outdoor music events.

The festival invites interest from musicians, as well as artists, presenters and speakers for specialist programmes such as circus, vaudeville, the high profile environmental and health programmes, comedy, traditional folkloric, spoken word, workshops and visual arts.

Having endured their wettest year on record and sustained significant damage due to the Queensland floods, event producers the Queensland Folk Federation earlier announced that this year’s Woodford Folk Festival will feature a precinct dedicated to the prestigious International Indigenous festival, The Dreaming. Artists wishing to be a part of the Dreaming precinct can apply via the Woodford Folk Festival process.

All artists and presenters wishing to be a part of the Festival must complete an online Expression of Interest, now open online via the Woodford Folk Festival website: www.woodfordfolkfestival.com and will close at 5pm on Friday 20th May 2011. Applicants cannot be considered without a complete online application.

Interview with Helen Croome of Gossling

Interview: Bianca Martin
Following successful appearances at Woodford Folk Festival, Peats Ridge and NYE presented by the City of Melbourne over Summer, as well as sold out launch shows in Melbourne and Sydney for her current EP ‘Until Then, songstress Gossling has again hit the road and currently playing a string of shows throughout Australia – Bianca Martin (BM) caught up with Gossling vocalist Helen Croome (HC) for a chat.

BM – You’ve toured the country quite extensively in your short musical career – what have you been looking forward to most about this tour with Oh Mercy?

HC – I have been very lucky to support some amazing australian acts on their tours. I really enjoy getting to experience a different crowd in every town/city and it’s a joy to be able to watch Oh Mercy play their set every night.

BM – How has the tour been treating you so far?

HC – The crowds on this tour have been great and really supportive of my set. I’ve been playing solo for the majority of the shows on this tour and the guys from Oh Mercy have been very kind letting me tag along with them on the road.

Smoke on the Water – The Metropolis Sessions [CD/DVD Review]

Review: Natalie Salvo
Title: Smoke on the Water – The Metropolis Sessions
Artists: Various
A devastating earthquake rips through the city leaving tens of thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. No, I’m not writing about any one of the natural disasters to have plagued our planet over the last year or so. Sadly, history has a way of repeating itself and Mother Nature is one cruel bitch.

The year was 1988 and a 6.9 magnitude earthquake tore through Armenia. International charity campaigner, Jon Dee was there working at getting coverage of the devastation and he was so horrified by what he saw (particularly the images of people carrying child size coffins) that he felt compelled to do something and hence, “Smoke On The Water-The Metropolis Sessions” was born. It was to be a reworking of the Deep Purple classic, a song that is almost instilled into our brains at birth and certainly one that any aspiring guitarist worth his weight will work through at some point.

HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY IN THE AMERICAN CMJ CHART AND TOURING AUSTRALIA – April/May 2011

Brisbane’s HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY are back in the country following a recent jaunt to the USA and Canada where they took part and played stellar sets at South By South West and Canadian Music Week, turning heads and pricking the ears of punters and the industry heads that crossed their path. The likes of tastemaker stations such as KCRW touted the band as one of the best international acts to play the Texan conference/festival while,

currently, the band is sitting at #101 on the American College Music Charts with their Mega Mountain EP, a small taste of things to come when their album is released worldwide in the coming months.

The Waifs – Falling

Temptation - The Waifs   Temptation – The Waifs
“Where do we take it from here?”
It’s a question the much-loved Australian band has asked itself several times in the 19 years since Thorn, her sister Donna Simpson and guitarist Josh Cunningham set off on their incredible journey.

A trip that began in a van in 1992, with the three troubadours playing gigs anywhere in Australia that would have them, has led The Waifs to multiple ARIA awards, platinum albums and successful tours across the world. The hard yards in those early days paid off in terms of their career, but also bound the three of them together as friends.

Myles Mayo – Myles Mayo [Album Review]

Review by: Ben Connolly

Buy the CD here
First albums can be tricky beasts to get right. For some they’re cringe-worthy telegraphs of earnest naivety best left uncovered, for others they signpost a highpoint never again attained. For most, however, they are a hotch-potch of eagerness and ideas, often with so much crammed into short hard-won studio time or crazy experiments trying to find their way around a myriad of home recording equipment.

Myles Mayo’s self-titled debut release falls into the latter “trying to cram everything in” category which, while certainly interesting and intriguing, often comes across as a curious iPod playlist at times, rather than a cohesive narrative.

Mayo is the front-man of Adelaide pop-rock band Special Patrol who’s found just enough internal artistic drive to branch out on his own.
