Laneway Festival 2009: Second Announcement

– Brisbane Set Times –

In the continuing tradition of presenting music fans with the very best music that the country has to offer, the Laneway Festival is pleased to announce a huge array of amazing local acts to the line-up – see below – in each city, in addition to a few exciting developments in 2009 across the country.

In Melbourne, the gorgeous, historic Victorian State Library will play host – for the first time ever – to a music stage on its steps, transforming the grassy knoll into an ampitheatre featuring the best of Melbourne’s underground. We’re also teaming up with QV to present a stage in their quadrangle. Chill out to some of our finest low-fi acts as the Laneway Festival takes over the entire QV precinct. Melbourne punters can also admire Warwick Baker’s astonishing pictures in his Laneway Festival photography retrospective.

The people at The Thousands are using their considerable knowledge of the best local designers, street fashion and art to present independent designer markets at the Laneway Festival in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Buy some cool vintage stuff, designer gear or baked goods and use their concierge mail service so you don’t have to lug it around. ??We are excited to support the thriving W.A music scene as we head to Perth for the first time for a special twilight show. The Path to Laneway program offers emerging, original, unsigned (to a major record label) Western Australian acts the chance to open the Perth leg of the festival. You only have a week to enter, so get to www.sonicbids.comfor all the details.

Tickets to all shows are selling quickly and there will be no second release of tickets. Get yours now from www.moshtix.com.au

BRISCOE CREATES HISTORY AT THE NIKON INDY 300 – Gold Coast – October 2008

The final day of the Nikon Indy 300 on the streets of Surfers Paradise has concluded with the locals ‘FIRING UP’ to take the ultimate spoils today.

In the IndyCar Series, Australian Ryan Briscoe became the first driver from ‘Down Under’ to win on the Gold Coast in the Event’s 18 year history.

Originally from Sydney, Briscoe is also the first driver to win on the Gold Coast under the IndyCar Series category sanction, after the US open-wheel racing unification earlier this year.

Briscoe had the Brisbane-born Kiwi Scott Dixon in hot pursuit for the entire 60 lap race as he led the way from lap 17, before taking the chequered flag to be the 17th different winner of the Event.

While Briscoe was triumphant, his fellow Australian and fan favourite Will Power saw an early lead come to a cruel end after he led the opening 16 laps.

Power brushed the inside wall on the apex of Turn Five, breaking his steering and heading into the Turn 6 wall in what is the second part of the Bartercard Esses.

Power attempted to limp his mount back to the pits but was forced to park at Turn Eight, one day after making history by winning his third-consecutive pole position on the Gold Coast and becoming the first three-time polesitter for the Nikon Indy 300.

While Power met an unfortunate end, the polesitter in the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series was untouchable – with the Gold Coast’s Jamie Whincup following up his pole and race one victory with two race wins today.

The results saw Whincup undeniably clinch his tenth career round win and further establish his championship lead over fellow Ford driver Mark Winterbottom and Holden driver Garth Tander.

While Whincup relinquished the lead for a short period early in the first of today’s two races, the majority of the weekend saw him well and truly in the leading position where, despite a continuously challenging Tander.

When it came to round wins in the Carrera Cup, the only support category to race today, it was James Moffat who stood on the top step, with David Wall second and the season champion Craig Baird – the Gold Coaster secured the championship before this weekend’s final round – in third.

NIKON INDY 300 OFF TO A FLYING START

  Nikon Indy 300 - Gold Coast - October 2008 Nikon Indy 300 - Gold Coast - October 2008

The first day of the Nikon Indy 300 has got off to a flying start on the Streets of Surfers Paradise today.

The IndyCar Series team of Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing have prepared for their first appearance on track on Friday in a unique way, taking part in a two-part activity with the Australian Defence Force yesterday and today.

Wednesday afternoon saw NHLR drivers Justin Wilson and Graham Rahal, along with 20 of their crew, head to the launch pad with the Army Aviation Brigade for a flight aboard two Black Hawk Helicopters over the Gold Coast.

Captain Nick Kelly flew the Black Hawk with co-pilot Captain Greg Smalley to give Wilson and Rahal an entirely different perspective of the Surfers Paradise coastline, including a birds-eye view of the Nikon Indy 300 circuit.

“It was a great experience to be able to view the track from a totally different angle, to fly around the buildings and look down at the track was awesome and its another great memory I will always have from Surfers Paradise,” said Rahal.

To return the favour extended to them by the Army Aviation troopers, the team opened its garage to them in SEEK Pit Lane today to allow them to get up close and personal with Wilson’s Honda/Dallara/Firestone in the garage with some even having the chance to sit in the car while others checked out Rahal’s machine in pit lane.

BIG DAY OUT 2009 – Official First Announcement

BIG DAY OUT 2009
THE OFFICIAL FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Photo: Tony Mott

With the global economy on the brink of collapse, what better time to ask people to hand over their hard earned money to escape the world for a day.

And who better to prove to you that investing in music is safer and returns much more than banks any day: the man who has seen it all, Neil Young.

This is a proud moment for BDO. After 17 years of producing the most dynamic, entertaining and challenging event we possibly can, this year’s shows promise to stand out from all others.

From the dynamic sounds of Arctic Monkeys or the lush depth of TV on the Radio to the wealth of great local talent or the welcome return of the Prodigy, the world’s biggest travellin’ circus will be once again back on the road next January.

We are also working on making sure the Melbourne site is green, has shade and offers the level of enjoyment you deserve. Drought or no drought.

So come and join us for just one day. We hope the first announcement will satisfy your musical needs, but for those who need more, there will be a second announcement in November…

BIG DAY OUT is honoured to announce the arrival of one of those rare modern musicians for whom the term “legend” is more under than over-statement: NEIL YOUNG. At a prolific phase of his 40-year-plus career, YOUNG is leading his band through eclectic set lists, picking from 2008’s Chrome Dreams II, delving into classics like Hey Hey, My My, and venting his activist’s spleen on Let’s Impeach the President. Witness the many faces of a true rock icon, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows
