Bluesfest 2011 – Day Six, Featuring: Bob Dylan, Gurrumul, Paul Kelly and Buffy Sainte-Marie. – Live Review

One of the beautiful things about a festival as large and varied as Bluesfest is that the discovery of something new and exciting, at least for the listener, waits around every corner. For this reviewer, Canadian First Nations singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie was the jewel of this year’s hidden treasures.

Already familiar with her 60s hit Universal Soldier and the rocking Bury My Heart at

Wounded Knee, as well as her Academy Award winning effort Up Where We Belong (who isn’t?), it was a pleasure to become acquainted with the other varied dimensions of her 40 plus year repertoire, and to experience the woman behind the music.

Bluesfest 2011 – Day Five, Featuring: Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, BB & the Blues Shacks, and the Old Spice Boys. – Live Review

by: Pepa Wolfe
Monday was another delightful mix of new discoveries and big names, with a good dose of puppetry and performance art thrown in.

The day saw the some rocking blues with plenty of keys down at the Crossroads tent as German outfit BB & the Blues Shacks charmed the crowd. Physically dynamic and looking sharp, BB and his boys really ramped up the audience participation. It was an onstage/offstage love-in, complete with dancing girls on stilts.

Interview: Kid Sam – Keiran Ryan

Kid Sam   Interviewer: Hannah Collins

It’s a ridiculously hot summer day in Melbourne. Keiran Ryan (KR) is lying on the couch, drinking tea *not iced tea because he ‘don’t like that stuff’* chatting with Hannah Collins (LMM) on all things ‘Kid Sam‘.

LMM: So whats ‘Kid Sam‘ up to?

KR: ‘We have a couple of weeks off now and then Laneway (Laneway Festival), which should be really awesome, the lineup is fantastic with a really strong Australian contingent! I’m looking forward to Dirty Three, Oh Murphy?, and Philadelphia Grand Jury again. We’ve done a tour with them already. Yeah, so it’s great. Then comes the Daniel Johnston gigs which we’re like, hugely, hugely excited about!

Sunday Selection: The Sunburys : 19 July 2009

LifeMusicMedia Sunday Selection is your weekly view to Queensland Artists

The Sunburys
Here Comes The Sunburys is the debut album from Brisbane’s freshest antidote to unlistenable radio.

As their name suggests, The Sunburys are a band with an appreciation of great moments in the history of rock and roll. Like Steve Marriott quitting the Small Faces to form Humble Pie. Or Bob Dylan going electric. Moments when greats become legends, risking obscurity for the sake of creative integrity.

Having already done the rounds of Australian festivals, enjoyed high rotation radio and flaunted their chops on national television in previous bands, The Sunburys have taken a diversion. They are prepared to risk not being popular, for the sake of making music for people with soul and good taste. They don’t really give a toss about whether you approve of their haircuts. They do love the swagger of warranted attitude, but have little time for those who rank style above substance.
