News: BIGSOUND Trends Worldwide, Announces 2013 Dates

After eleven years, BIGSOUND has well and truly cemented its place on the global scale as the official Twitter hashtag, #bigsound trended worldwide last night.

BIGSOUND 2012 was the home of an intimate, frank and deeply personal keynote speech by Steve Earle, revelations of industry spats from the Are Artists Being Paid Too Much panel, or the passionate discussions of the creation and development of ground-breaking albums in the Making Records That Matter panel.

Live Review: Shihad @ The Hi-Fi, Melbourne – 6 September 2012

Review by Ben Connolly
Boldness is not generally an adjective jumping to mind when you think of Kiwi band Shihad. With its skinny black-jeans clad legs planted firmly in the safe melodic-tinged rock scene pushed forth as the genre de jour of the late 90s and early 00s, you’d hardly seek out their albums to push boundaries or explore sonic adventures. Even more so in the past few years, where they’ve rotated around the all-too-familiar downward spiral of record-promote-tour-hope for relevance-rinse-repeat: it’s hardly a recipe for the cutting edge.

There is, however, an impressive boldness with the simple honesty with which they’ve approached their career crossroads moment: shunning the best-ofs and karaoke tour of their past glories in favour of a 38-song full career retrospective (a completist’s wet dream), a fly-on-the-wall cinema doco exposing the bands lowest moment of changing their name in a doomed attempt to storm the US market, and topping it all off with a solid live whip-around aimed squarely at the true believers.

News: Godspeed You! Black Emperor – February 2013 Tour Dates

“massive, achingly beautiful work, alternately elegiac and ferocious.” Pitchfork

Seminal Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor will bring their heartrending live show to Australia for the first time this February. Already announced to perform at ATP’s ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’, the band will also headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

GY!BE was created in 1994 as a solo musical outlet for Efrim Menuck, with the name borrowed from a little known 1976 Japanese black and white documentary. Three years on, Menuck was invited to perform at a show in Montreal, and asked bassist Mauro Pezzente and guitarist Mike Moya to accompany him. The band quickly grew to a core group of nine members and in 1997 they released their debut album F#A#∞. They’ve since gone on to release 3 studio albums and an EP, each generally consisting of an entire piece which is then divided into sections ranging from 15 to 25 minutes.

Star Wars Family Car Decals

Star Wars Family Car Decals
The Force is strong in this car

We had some fun conversations in the office as we tried to come up with families that we could create with this set of stickers. Dad as Darth Vader, Mom as Slave Leia? Ew, no. Dad as Chewbacca, Mom as Padmé Amidala? Let’s not think about that. Dad as Han Solo and Mom as Leia would work, but would they really produce a Yoda and a tiny Stormtrooper?

Discover: The Invincible Summer’s debut single “Runaway”

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me… an Invincible Summer” – Albert Camus

After spending the Australian summer in the chill of the northern hemisphere, Sydney based multi-instrumentalist Matt James returned home with a vision to establish a musical collective entitled The Invincible Summer, inspired by French author Albert Camus’ quote which he saw scrawled on the side of his Darlinghurst hall upon his return to Australia.

Runaway is the debut single from the forthcoming self-titled debut LP, due in store early 2013.
