Nelly in the house at Newcastle Panthers 9th January 2014

Newcastle enjoyed music royalty in the house on Friday night. St Louis rapper Nelly came to town and brought class to the Panthers stage. Nelly was in in fine company with Lupe Fiasco performing next to him as brothers in arms as they both took on the massive Novocastrian crowd.

Talented Atlanta rappers B.o.B were given the job of warming up the crowd. The guys one hour set had everybody looking for fluid resuscitation before the man took the stage. Visiting Australia for the first time in four years Nelly seemed at home from the time Lupe introduced him to the crowd. At 40 years of age Nelly represents prime male talent, loved by women of all ages. This was very evident observing the balance of women to men present at the show. The promoters were smart enough to open the gig to under 18’s this ensured a sell-out of the show.

Taking the stage equipped with golden glasses, a years’ worth of wages in jewellery and even a gold microphone as an audience member you were overdosed on bling. Loupe looked fantastic dressed in a singlet revealing biceps that would make even the most macho guy envious.

The set itself was quite eclectic with something for everyone. Opening with “Party People” from the Brass Knuckles album a chart hit at the time featuring American singer Fergie. Moving quickly into “Ei” from the country grammar album, the crowd was in great voice singing word for word with the master “….Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh Uh, wait a minute now, Uh, oh, Uh, uh”. From that moment the packed house became the unpaid backing vocals for the show. With songs from almost all of nine albums released by the master covered it was up to him to complete the gig with well-rehearsed audience stage antics. Three girls were given prime place on stage. All were fans and they took turns at delivering Nelly lyrics in the most sexy provocative way. “Is it getting hot n here or what?” as a hot blonde bumped and grinded her way to 5 minutes of fame. The show culminated with the hit “Just a dream” from the album 5.0.

Overall exciting to see an audience pumped and singing to each and every word. A pleasure reserved for such a few these days. Thanks for visiting the town Nelly.
