Karen Leng announces her final Kinky Afro

KAREN LENGMelbourne community radio station 3RRR 102.7FM has announced that after 29 years as a volunteer broadcaster, Karen Leng is leaving her program Kinky Afro in order to pursue other creative endeavours with ABC radio. Karen has made an amazing contribution to 3RRR and is very highly regarded by the station’s volunteers, staff and subscribers.

Since beginning with Triple R in 1985 Karen has presented many celebrated music programs including Station to Station, Hotwire and since 2001, Kinky Afro.

Her knowledge of music and talent for radio have set an exceptionally high standard of broadcasting on a weekly basis, on top of juggling the demands of raising a young family and managing a separate career working in the media.

3RRR is far better off for Karen’s hard work and commitment to excellent programming over the last three decades. While we’re incredibly sad to see Karen go, we do so with the utmost gratitude for all of her work over so many years. Karen has set an amazing example for generations of Triple R broadcasters. Her contribution sits alongside the most significant in the station’s 38-year history and will not be forgotten. We wish her only the best.” – Dave Houchin, 3RRR Station Manager

I have had the time of my life at Triple R. Kinky Afro has been the highlight of my week for many years and I will miss the show and the awesome community of listeners, vols and staff enormously. I may be leaving but I will always be listening.” – Karen Leng

Kinky Afro – The Finale
Karen’s last Kinky Afro will be held at 4pm on Thursday 19 June and broadcast live from the Triple R Performance Space. The program will celebrate Karen’s years at Triple R with great music, archival material and special guests.

Lauren Taylor and Simon Winkler’s Breaking And Entering will be moving from Monday afternoon to replace Kinky Afro at 4pm every Thursday from 26 June where it will continue to focus on the new and the next, current and upcoming releases.

Furthermore, former Breakfasters anchor Fee B-Squared will present Maps from 23 June 2014, mapping out your musical journey every Monday afternoon from 4 to 7pm.
