Australia’s favourite one-two rock combo The Grates, are set to add yet another highlight to their extensive show reel after being announced as the support act for legendary US psych rockers The Flaming Lips for their one and only Australian headline show in Melbourne, Friday January 8, 2016.
The electrifying Patience Hodgson and enigmatic John Patterson will light up the stage with colour and whip up the crowd with their explosive signature brand of celebration rock at Melbourne’s iconic Palais Theatre ahead of Wayne Coyne & Co taking the stage and unleashing their confetti cannons, space bubbles and wildly tripped out calamity.
The Grates’ performance will undoubtedly be yet another triumphant moment for the AMP-nominated Brisbane act, whose blistering set at this year’s Splendour In The Grass Festival was resoundingly voted as one of the event’s best on a bill filled with showstoppers. With four critically acclaimed records under their belts, including most recent release 2014’s ‘Dream Team’, as well as a rap sheet that has seen them perform on some of the most revered live stages across the globe and here at home in Oz, it’s suffice to say that the band have earned a place on the podium alongside some of the nation’s premiere rock acts.
Meanwhile, The Flaming Lips, headed up by the wonderful wizard that is Wayne Coyne, are no strangers to Australia; their most recent trip was in 2012/13 to headline Falls Festival and Southbound, where they showcased the theatrics and sonic marvels that saw them named one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die” by Q Magazine (as well as everyone that’s ever seen them play live ever).
Best known for their hit singles ‘Do You Realize??’ and ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’, The Flaming Lips have released more than 16 albums including acclaimed ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ (2001) and ’Embryonic’ (2009) and have collaborated with innovative artists from Nick Cave, Yoko Ono, Henry Rollins, Peaches, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Sean Lennon, and Erykah Badu to the recent 2015 MTV Video Music Awards performance with close friend and pop renegade Miley Cyrus.
The group’s latest studio album is 2014’s With a Little Help from My Fwends – a track-for-track tribute to The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Prior to that, The Flaming Lips’ latest all-original album is 2013’s The Terror.
This Melbourne show will be their only solo headline Australian show ahead of appearances at the Sydney Festival on January 9 and the MONA FOMA festival in Hobart on January 15, 2015.
Don’t miss The Grates opening for The Flaming Lips’ on their only Australian headline show at the iconic Palais Theatre, Friday January 8, 2016.
