Live Review: The Fumes @ The Zoo, Brisbane 12 December 2009 w/ Marshall and the Fro
Author: Hannah Collins
It’s Saturday night at The Zoo, time to kick back, get your hat on, and knuckle down for the rockabilly blues ensemble that is The Fumes.
Venue not even at half capacity, making stage front space an easy grab, 3 piece Marshall and the Fro introduce us to a very fun filled evening. With influences like Dallas Frasca, Blue King Brown and Tool, the bluesy rock set saw everybody’s feet sliding backwards and forward’s in time with the drums. Bass player Tracy Stephens looked great in a little red and white pokerdot dress, her bass pumping blues down the spines of eager onlookers. Their unique light rock, beefy but slow with it’s rockabilly undertone seemed to really intrigue.

Australia, strap yourself in, ‘cause dope and SOiL are joining forces to make one huge, hell of a show and throwing it our way! These two hard-hitting bands are renowned for their wild and industrial driven live shows, which will be sure to blow audiences when they both tour Australia’s east coast for the first time.
dope, with their politically charged, sonic arsenal of sounds mixed with a grooving, melodic style appeals to metal fans across the board. Their live set has been described by reviewers as crazy, primal, tight and pumped full of raw energy, and they get their audience going wild, so you know you’re in for one hell of a show. Not only do these boys play kick-ass music, their sex-drugs-and-rock-n-roll attitude and swagger will leave you craving more of them. |

Live Review: Karnivool, Regular John, Coerce @ The Tivoli, 25 November 2009

Karnivool, Regular John, Coerce @ The Tivoli, 25.11.2009 By Denis Semchenko Having successfully escaped my Pearl Jam fan-invaded neighbourhood, by the time I get to The Tivoli openers Coerce have already finished. From a friend’s account, the UK combo played a solid set of angular prog-rock with At The Drive-In leanings, which would have by all means made for a decent listening experience for this writer. For the time being, though, Sydneysiders Regular John will do – and they do it with gusto, cranking up heady garage-rock riffs and pentatonic licks and flailing the ‘70s long hair. Some post-2002 Grinspoon echoes are heard throughout but the quartet’s overall feel is that of the ballsy vintage rock & roll, somewhat incongruous given the headliner’s complex, emotion-drenched oeuvre, yet fun nonetheless. |

BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT AUSTRALIAN TOUR w/ special guest RIO EN MEDIO (USA) – January 2010
![]() |
Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia, the slow and hazy psychedelic jams of New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light. Their dreamy, blissed out desert tones will be the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer.
The band was founded by the gentle naturalist ND Shineywater, hailing from Alabama, birthplace of icons such as Sun Ra & Diana Ross. Shineywater since has moved to live a minimal life off the coal/nuclear grid in New Mexico, by using only four solar panels in his small adobe dwelling. |
For this tour Brightblack Morning Light will consist of Shineywater with two accompanists: Danielle Stech-Homsy (keyboards/vocals) who has released two fine solo albums under the name Rio en Medio, and Cannupa Luger, a Native American artist and percussionist who lives in the mountains nearby Shineywater’s home.

Live Review | ARCH ENEMY @ HI-FI Brisbane 7 November 2009 with Winds of Plague (USA) and Suffocation (USA)
Review: Hannah Collins
Having spoken with Michael Amott re their most recent Album launch and subsequent tour schedule only last month, I can’t wait to see one of today’s most sought after guitarists in action!
Just 10 minutes after doors opened at the venue, we hear the drum beats blast into the night air as the building we’re in and those surrounding begin to vibrate in time with the pressing percussion seeping out through the walls of Brisbane’s Hi Fi Bar; a whole block away!
My heart misses a beat, and my conscious won’t forgive me if I miss ANY of tonight’s gig, so off we run. We’re greeted at the door by an almost empty line up, all the smart kids got inside a while ago. A sea of black awaits, a room full of metal heads all wearing their favorite bands most recent album cover, pressed on casual tee’s and worn over classic ink….. it doesn’t get any more metal than this!

Live Review: Tom Ugly with The Rocketsmiths and Comic Sans @ The Troubadour, Brisbane
Review by: Bec
You can’t help but get excited about the youth music scene when you see bands like Comic Sans, The Rocketsmiths and Tom Ugly perform.
Hands down the best performance of the night was first support four-piece group, Comic Sans, who are in the throes of recording their first EP. This is a band to watch. Consistently brilliant and musically elusive, they wowed the small crowd at The Troubadour with a commanding display of musical dexterity and sophistication. They give a truly committed live performance that rivets your attention. Exciting; talented; you can’t ignore Comic Sans’ presence; they have the X factor.

Live Review: UK Subs @ The Zoo, Brisbane 7 October 2009
Review By Jose Eduardo Cruz
This rather cold Wednesday night presented itself as an interesting proposition from the start. It would have been safe to assume that if you had decided to set up a hair spray stall just outside the venue you would have made a handsome profit. Or perhaps spiked bracelets and belts may have also pocketed you enough for a six pack of beer.
This is a nostalgic night for many of the punters present tonight trying to relive past experiences from faraway places and long gone times. I had the pleasure of speaking to two such fans that could not contain their enthusiasm over what this meant to them. One had seen UK Subs 30 years ago before he migrated to Australia. The other saw them 15 years ago and duly noted the aging process that had taken a hold of Charlie Harper. Such is the life of a legendary trend setter.

SKID ROW Australian Tour – October 2009
![]() |
In 1986 SKID ROW was born in a garage somewhere in Toms River, N.J. Like a bastard child of a thousand maniacs, they relentlessly pounded the New Jersey club circuit; packing houses wherever they performed.
Fast forward to 1989, SKID ROW’s self titled debut album goes on to sell over 5 million copies in the U.S.A., along with a tour that takes them around the world. |
In 1992 the band releases their second record “SLAVE TO THE GRIND” which debuts at #1 on the Billboard charts, making them the first Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band to do so. The album rockets to multi-platinum status. This is also followed by a massive world tour.

Evermore ‘The Truth Of The World’ Tour 2009
Consider everything you think you know about Evermore. Run through their history, of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume growing up in the rural New Zealand town of Feilding and finding their feet as musicians. Reflect on their breakthrough 2004 debut Dreams and its beautifully crafted follow-up, 2006’s Real Life, selling platinum and double platinum. Look at their six ARIA Award nominations, two NZ Music Awards, Channel [V] and MTV gongs, and the high esteem in which music fans and peers hold them. Gather those thoughts for a moment – then get ready to be blown away.
“It’s the album we’ve been wanting to make since we started the band,” says singer and guitarist Jon, 25. “It’s a concept album that takes inspiration from trashy media and political propaganda, and turns it into a fun, over the top rock’n‘roll show.”
