Neil Young "Here We Are In The Years" On DVD June 21

Despite remaining a hugely original singer, songwriter, performer and, let’s face it, human being, across a career spanning almost fifty years, Neil Young has never been immune to the influence of others. This will be of no surprise to anyone with even a hint of interest in the man and his music, but only those who have studied their subject in depth will be aware of the enormous range of artists and genres Neil has both been affected by and drawn inspiration from, much of which, if one knows where to look, is apparent in Young’s incredible catalogue.

As with so many of his 1960s contemporaries, his first love was the classic rock & roll of the mid-1950s, but as the 50s tuned into the 60s, twangy guitars courtesy of Duane Eddy, The Fireballs and – even more notably – Hank B. Marvin of Brit-instrumentalists The Shadows took over, both for pleasure and for guidance – indeed his first band, The Squires, were dead-ringers for The Shads.

The folk-revival of the late 1950s didn’t pass Neil by, and from this genre he was deeply moved by fellow Canadians Ian & Sylvia, whom Young would never forget, recording their ‘Four Strong Winds’ in 1978 and still name-dropping the husband and wife act to this day. Bob Dylan’s affect on Neil is well known but by mid decade, British folk-blues guitarist and composer Bert Jansch had equally hit a note with Young, and years later they would tread the boards together on many occasions.

But Young wasn’t stuck in the decade in which he emerged as a musician. Throughout the late 1960s and the 1970s he kept an ear to the ground and, despite claiming in 1975 that he had given up listening to other people’s records, he was clearly enthralled by both the impulse and the sounds of the punk revolution, giving the infamous Johnny Rotten equal credit to recently departed hero Elvis Presley, on his 1979 opus Hey Hey, My My. His work with new-wavers Devo compounded this ongoing delight in new sounds and the technology that accompanied them, and by 1982’s Trans it was no secret he’d had Kraftwerk on heavy rotation.

And while during the 1980s he often harked back to styles previously toyed with – country, rockabilly, folk, r’n’b – his early 90s salutations from grunge’s finest weren’t shrugged off with the kind of disinterest that may have been forthcoming from others of his vintage. Neil both made records with and wrote songs about some of the best of these young upstarts and the teacher became the pupil in a wholly bewildering chain of events.

This film traces the astonishing musical journey of Neil Young from the day he first heard Elvis to his most recent offerings, via the above named and numerous others who assisted in his creation of, arguably, the finest body of work to emerge during the rock era.

The Submarines – ‘Love Notes/Letter Bombs’ – Album Review

Review by Helen Brown

Love Notes / Letter Bombs - The SubmarinesLove Notes / Letter Bombs – The Submarines
From unrequited love to hidden desires, and everything in between: The Submarines’ third LP, Love Notes / Letter Bombs, explores the gamut of these emotions. The album consists of 10 sunny indie electro-pop songs direct from California. The first few tracks are cute duets with the chemistry-ridden male and female vocals of John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard – including ‘Ivaloo’ with a charming ukulele riff and string section – on the subject of exploring your friendships, following your heart and discovering new feelings for one another. Afterwards, Love Notes/Letter Bombs changes direction and focuses more on internal feelings and insecurities from a female perspective.

DAMN TERRAN – RATIONAL ECONOMIC MAN [Video Clip]

Combining the talents of brothers Lachlan (guitar and vocals) and Leigh Ewbank (drums) as well as Ali Edmonds (bass) Damn Terran have rightfully earned a reputation for being one of Melbourne’s most incendiary live bands.

‘Rational Economic Man’ is four minutes of addictive tension and release. Anger and control play out meticulously in staccato chords, stop/start rhythms and Ewbank’s melodic yet virulent vocals.

To capture Rational Economic Man’s raucous glory, Damn Terran invited dedicated fans and curious punters to a Melbourne warehouse for the filming of its accompanying video clip. The entire clip was shot using head-cameras worn by the band and members of the audience, resulting in a realistic view of both band and fan alike.

The Wombats @ The Tivoli, Brisbane – 5 May 2011 – Live Review

Review by: Lauren Sherritt
Known for catchy tunes, clever lyrics, playfully sung narratives and an outstanding energy, The Wombats played to a sold out Tivoli in Brisbane on Thursday night, giving their all to make it a night to remember for the fans attending.

So popular were tickets to the trio’s show that Thursday night’s gig was their second Brisbane performance, organised for those who had missed out on tickets for the original Tuesday night show. Being all ages, the evening started early, with doors opening at six-thirty and the band taking the stage just after eight. Populated mainly by teens delighted to be able to see the marsupial-inspired band in the flesh, the crowd got busy chanting for The Wombats early on.

Thursday – ‘No Devolución’ – Album Review

By Helen Brown

No Devolucion - ThursdayNo Devolucion – Thursday
Nowadays, the word ‘genre’ can be the kiss of death for a band. Unless they do something phenomenal and memorable with their music, they run the risk of falling into a certain category and being lost among the throngs of other musicians doing the exact same thing. Case in point: Thursday’s sixth release, No Devolucion. This New Jersey-based outfit have
created an album loaded with screamo American rock and impressive lead vocals, projecting a dark and broody atmosphere. Unfortunately, this effort is not ground-breaking and we have heard it all before. Licks of fuzzed-out guitar with sporadic psychedelic notes on No Devolución offer something else to the typical screamo mould, but it is not quite different enough to redeem the album. The tracks are

primarily average with hardly any substance, in some cases comparable to an emo church choir if such a thing existed.

One example is the track ‘Open Quotes,’ consisting of a mellow introduction with acoustic guitar and soft piano notes. This is but a brief reprieve from the hardcore onslaught of the rest of the song, with strong drumming and an ever-changing tempo that comes to a sudden halt at the end. The track is about someone sorting through their emotions, and trying to survive and find their place in a dark world, once again very similar to what we have all heard before.
