Live Review | Soundwave Festival 2014 – Brisbane
Review by Brandon Blythe
The streets leading into Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds were flooded with excited fans eagerly waiting for the gates to open to this years Soundwave festival. As far as the eye can see were show goers of all age’s shapes and sizes proudly wearing their favourite band moniker or dressed in attention seeking costumes. The gates open, the crowd spills in and the day begins.
Our first stop was Amon Amarth who had been slated the very early 11am spot on Stage 4. The early start didn’t stop a league of loyal fans from packing the stage to see the Swedish melodic death metal band blasting out their best… Viking ship and all.
“Mon the Biff” – On Stage 1, Biffy Clyro gave everything they had and more! The shirtless, tattooed Scots rocking out a frantic set of favourites, fuelling the audience and setting a standard for the day ahead. Frontman Simon Neil captivatingly plays and sings and connects with the crowd. Ending on a high “We are Biffy f**king Clyro!“.

Origin announce Australian tour – May 2014
Quite possibly the most destructive and heaviest tour of the year will roar across the nation this May with US tech-death giants, Origin leading, A Million Dead Birds Laughing and Eternal Rest through a six date reign of terror.
One of the most intense and technical forces in the contemporary death metal world, Origin have staked their claim as leaders of the new wave of extremity. Their fifth album, Entity, is a blueprint for frantic, hell paced grinds of sonic torment seamlessly mixed with churning grooves and some incredibly catchy hooks. With new vocalist Jason Keyser out the front, the band are prepped to tear Australia a new one.

THE FRATELLIS – Australian Tour – April 2014
We need excitement. We need rip-roaring tunes. We need THE FRATELLIS.
THE FRATELLIS have been creating heart-swelling, lung-bursting anthems since 2006. With a short hiatus in 2009, the lads are now back and in career best form with their new album ‘We Need Medicine’. Three cheers for what’s likely to be the best comeback of the year. “Once you’ve picked your ears off the floor, you’ll agree.” – Take 40

Phil Smith Releases New Video Ahead Of Album Launch
Folk artist PHIL SMITH releases ‘YEAR OF THE DOG’ – an album that pays tribute to the melancholy and mad moments of his life.
Music with stripped-back soul, songs that speak to the inner stillness and sadness, an album that echoes after you stop playing it. This is how you could describe folk-country artist Phil Smith’s latest offering ‘Year Of The Dog’ — his 3rd full-length album, following 2008’s ‘Goldmine’, and 2010’s live studio album ‘Second Hand Heart’ which was produced by Scott Horscroft (Birds of Tokyo/ The Sleepy Jackson/The Panics/ Silverchair).

Yacht Club DJs Oddity Number 5 East Coast Tour Announcement
Too long have our dance floors lay dormant. Too long has ‘mash’ been of the potato variety. Australia’s favourite mash up maestros Yacht Club DJs will settle the score this April with their Oddity Number 5 Tour – an East Coast run of oddball proportions and the namesake of their fifth infamous mixtape.
It follows the duo’s stint through the UK and US last year; personally invited by Grammy Award winners Mumford & Sons to join them on their Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers, alongside Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, HAIM, The Walkmen and The Vaccines.

The Holidays release new album “Real Feel” | touring in March
The Holidays new album Real Feel celebrates its release today.
The follow up to Post Paradise and next week’s triple J feature album, Real Feel was painstakingly yet lovingly written over two years across numerous cities and continents, then recorded locally in Melbourne and Sydney. A travelogue of sorts, it echoes singer Simon Jones’ songwriting sojourns through major cities like Berlin, London, Paris and Tokyo.
“This was a difficult record to make, always searching for a sound just beyond our grasp, narrowing in and trying to capture some essence. I had an idea for a sound that I couldn’t quite name or explain, a vague feeling, somewhere between love and loneliness, like a daydream where you can’t quite remember the content but the feelings you had remain. I guess that’s what this album is, trying to make real the intangible feelings of a few years of living.” – Simon Jones, The Holidays
Fans would already be familiar with new tracks ‘Voices Drifting’, ‘All Time High’ and ‘Home’, which have helped the band firmly put themselves back on the radar via radio play and blog love, after their international adventures.
In less than two weeks, the band will take to the road for a national tour that will see them travel to regional as well as metro locations. Supporting The Holidays on the tour will be Brisbane indie-pop stars, The Cairos. Tickets are available for all shows now.
Real Feel is out today.

Brisbane five-piece Settling – “Drop the Game” (Music Stream)
Settling are an indie-pop five-piece from Brisbane, Australia. Settling started in 2012 as the solo project of Brisbane singer-songwriter, Tim Swanston. After collaborating with local vocalist/guitarist Kurtis Tupangaia, they duo made their debut into the Brisbane live music scene, backed by their trusty laptop. Deciding that they needed to flesh out their sound, they added local musicians Andrew Markwell (lead guitar) and Becky Meimaris (drums). This addition led to a change in musical direction, taking their acoustic-led folk songs into a heavier, poppier sound.

Nova & The Experience – New Single + Tour Dates
Indie pop favourites Nova & The Experience have just announced a nine-date East Coast tour, to promote the release of their new single ‘Shipwrecked’.
‘Shipwrecked’ is the last song off N.A.T.E’s latest EP – ‘There’s Something Here’. The song helps to round off the loose narrative that was told throughout the EP. This slow building track (in 6/8 timing, unusual for a pop song) was again produced by Lachlan Mitchell and is rolling, layered and visually descriptive.
