Guttermouth Australian Tour – January/February 2012

They concluded one of the longest Australian tours by any international act in 2010, now Guttermouth are returning to their second home to do an extended tour of the East Coast of Australia.

Straight out of Huntington Beach, California; Guttermouth have been stirring controversy for almost 25 years with few bands matching the intensity on stage and off. They have seen the rise and fall of many of their punk rock contemporaries, all the while managing to maintain their explicit in-your-face attitude all in the name of good fun. In 2010 they sold out shows all over Australia, Japan & even Thailand. In January they will drive all the way up the east coast again – starting in Geelong and making the journey all the way up to Cairns before jetting off to Japan & Europe as part of the biggest tour in their history.

Interview: Tim Wheatley – Crooked Saint

Interview by Chris Dornan

Just recently playing live shows up and down the East Coast are the highly successful band CROOKED SAINT with their new album “SWEATING BULLETS”. Chris Dornan (LMM) caught up with solo artist, songwriter and the front man for Crooked Saint, Tim Wheatley.

Chris Dornan: It’s been a great year for you and Crooked Saint with your newest EP SWEATING BULLETS. An EP completely full of a mixture of cool rhythms, harmonic melodies and a simplistic journey of brilliant songwriting. A perfect album to play at the beach this summer. With such a great band behind you including Michael Badger, Johnny Grant and Troy Ramaekers. Are you pleased with the early success so far?

Tim Wheatley: Thank you very much for that. I’m over the moon with everything. When we started this I just wanted to keep myself a little busier and once we finished up recording that first EP “Every Angry Inch” I got a bit of confidence in the tunes as I was a little uncertain at the start. Then I thought let’s take it to the next level and get the band and promote that record and push it and see what happens. I started hanging out with those guys and working with them and doing the shows. Going through the highs and lows I formed a bond with those boys and I’m happy having them on board and contributing now it feels a lot better. As for the shows, the response couldn’t have gone any better.

LifeMusicMedia: The mixture of laid back sounds and easy going styles on all the singles including the title track “Sweating Bullets” really show your diversity as a songwriter and to the simplistic single “Man In Waiting” which I felt was so true to life and the lyrics about “…for me to slip… for me to lose my grip. “I think it’s true of how society looks at us to sometimes fail. Was my interpretation correct or totally off the mark?

Tim Wheatley: Your interpretation was spot on. It’s funny because it comes across to me as a real happy highway song. Ironically I was writing it originally in a state of angst. There was a lot of pressure on me to be writing and progressing and moving forward. All the demos I was listening back to and I would say I don’t think I like that one or that’s good or there is some potential there. I was very angst to find the good ones to progress with. When I wrote that song I was struggling to find some stuff that was convincingly better. I got those lyrics from the feeling that there is someone there waiting to take my place and slip right in if I don’t up my game.

LifeMusicMedia: How much of your song writing is true to your life or the people around you?

T.W.: It’s very true. I sing about my surroundings and my environment and try to make it imaginative. I do take a little bit of poetic license here and there. Kind of fast forwarding the boring bits. It’s so very true. I stand by that because the songs that I’ve falling in love with growing up. People like Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers and The Band. They sing about stuff that can be occasionally self deprecating. A lot of the music out there these days is safe people just glorifying themselves. It is just a general statement. My favorite songs are the ones about the guy down in the dumps and it’s most likely his fault he got there.

LifeMusicMedia: What would be the biggest obstacle as a single artist and for your band Crooked Saint in the music industry today?

T.W.: Bands are really putting themselves out there. The harder they work and the more they get their name out there increases their chances of getting lucky and finding that support. The more time you spend out there you’ll win when the time is right. That’s the way I look at it. I think the biggest obstacle is being able to spend enough time and dedicating enough time. On a whim to be there at the right time. If that made any sense at all it increases your chances of lightning striking you and getting the push that you need.

LifeMusicMedia: Do you think the days gone where everyone had stacks of Albums, CD’S and cassette tapes? Do you feel that purchasing music online has hurt or improved the independent artist like yourself?

Tara Simmons – Be Gone | Review

Review by Victoria Nugent
Brisbane indie pop darling Tara Simmons‘ new single wasn’t what I was expecting. To recap for those unfamiliar with the talented muso, Simmons has blazed her way across the local music scene with sweet folk vocals with just a hint of spice.

Simmons first gained recognition in 2005 for single Everybody Loves You, which gained airplay on Triple J and went on to be a finalist at the Q Song Awards the following year. 2006 also saw Simmons release her debut EP, Pendulum. Since then Simmons has released another two EPs, an album and a compilation CD entitled EPilation featuring the tracks from her first two EPs.

Her most recent EP All You Can saw Simmons gather more steam, with two radio singles All You Can and I Cannot Be Saved. I Cannot Be Saved found its way into the musical accompaniments to various television shows, namely SLiDE and Winners and Losers.

Interview with Garry “Gaz” Jennings of Cathedral

Interview: Billy Geary
We caught up with Cathedral guitarist Garry “Gaz” Jennings for a quick chat about Soundwave 2012 – the last shows they’ll be performing together…

LMM: It’s been confirmed that the Soundwave tour would be your last ever tour together. What was the reasoning behind making Soundwave Soundwave your last set of shows together?

Garry “Gaz” Jennings: The last ever show was supposed to be the London show but about 2 days after we announced the gig this offer came in which was to good to turn down so we accepted and then announced the London show as the last uk show.

LMM: Does anyone in the band plan on moving onto other musical projects after Cathedral finishes up, or is this completely it for you guys in terms of playing professionally?

GJ: I think we will all continue in some shape or form whether it’s doing it professional or for fun. Brian has a side project already and they do quite alot of gigs and Scott will still play with Repulsion. Lee has his label and I’m sure he may get involved in some projects along the way. As for myself I’ll probably continue to play the guitar for fun but will not join or form a band. I may do a solo project at some point. I have loads of ideas which have never been used but I’m to lazy to do anything with them.

LMM: What are you most looking forward to about doing Soundwave 2012?

GJ: Just getting over there and playing and enjoying the fact that it’s the last time we will play together.

Brisbane International honours Evonne Goolagong Cawley

The Brisbane International women’s singles trophy was today named in honour of one of Australia’s greatest ever tennis players, Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

“Evonne, who was ranked in the top 10 for nine years and finished her career with multiple grand slam titles, was the obvious choice to name the women’s trophy after”, Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said today.

“She has contributed so much to the game during her career and continues to do so with her National Development Camp and work with indigenous youth.

“We felt it was only appropriate that we recognise Evonne’s contribution to the sport and there was no better way to do this than to name the women’s championship trophy in her honour.”

Goolagong Cawley said today that “it is an amazing honour to have the Brisbane International trophy named after me”.

“I have won a few trophies in my time but I have never had a major event name their trophy after me. This is particularly special as it is for a Queensland event, one that I love and also the state that I call home.

Nik Lone – These Pictures Won’t Tell | Album Review

Review by Victoria Nugent

It’s not often that the phrase mind blowing can be used justifiably but Nik Lone’s debut album is one instance where other descriptions just don’t quite suffice. From the very first seconds of play the music is hauntingly melancholy and incredibly beautiful. I can imagine Lone doing live performances to crowd with tear tracks weaving down their cheeks. That’s how much of an emotional impact Lone’s compositions make.

It’s unbelievable that Lone never had formal musical training and instead taught himself to sing, creating unique acappellla songs during his teen years. After pursuing a career in science, Lone start to really develop his music in the mid 2000s, backed by short lived band Goodnight Thomas. In 2006 Lone released the EP Close, spawning more frequent performances, festival appearances and a US tour.
