Classically trained, alt-pop prince, Jack Colwell, released his highly anticipated new single Far From View in February. This time Colwell is joined by the choir from Karen O’s (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) production of Stop the Virgens – a Psycho Opera, which had its Australian debut at Vivid Sydney in 2012.
Inspired by the sounds and loneliness of ‘Twin Peaks’, Far From View takes its listeners on a journey of heartache, interpreted with wailing strings, subtle melodies, intricate harmonies and amplified by its ethereal female chorus.
The Far From View video is a cinematic and expansive dream world in which to explore themes of regret and shame. Shot on 16mm film, it is heavily inspired by the work of Lynch, De Palma, and Crewdson to create a sweeping and nostalgic story about a teenage girl’s sexual awakening on prom night.
Still only in his early 20s, Colwell’s string of accolades read like an established arts and music connoisseur. In 2012, he independently released his stunning debut album ‘Picture Window’, which followed on from his well-received ‘White Noise’ EP. Colwell has featured on the soundtrack for Belvoir Street Theatre’s play ‘Whore’, and he was highly commended at the 2013 SOYA awards.
Headlining Sydney’s Surry Hills Festival and Newcastle’s This Is Not Art Festival, Colwell has performed live on stage at the Sydney Opera House with Architecture In Helsinki. He’s co-headlined with fellow Sydney artist Rainbow Chan at The Conservatorium Of Music, played a sold out Oxford Art Factory show with Brendan Maclean and most recently performed as part of the Sydney Festival ‘Folk series’.
Live, watching Jack Colwell is a colourful and energetic experience, often compared to the likes of Patrick Wolf with the eccentricities Nick Cave. His performances are described as dramatic and confronting – Jack doesn’t just share music, he bares his soul on stage; his gravitas for the art is both beautiful and haunting.
