Island VibeFriday: The weather gods have smiled upon us, after a week of much needed rain the clouds have parted and the sun is beaming down on a collection of camper vans, cars and kombis, most filled with reggae fans eagerly waiting to be loaded on to the Stradbroke Ferry. Island Vibe 09 awaits!

As the ferry pulls away from Cleveland port there is a collective sigh of relief & one’s first taste of what Straddie’s Island Vibe Festival has to offer is found sailing across Redland Bay meeting fellow festival goers. I can hear three different cars pumping reggae beats whilst other passengers take in the fresh air and scenery. Cars are packed to the rafters with tents, hammocks, pets and kids.

Josh Pyke – Announces Debut DVD Release “The LightHouse”

Sydney’s prolific songsmith, Josh Pyke, announces the release of his debut DVD ‘The Lighthouse’, out November 13 through Ivy League.

The centre piece of the DVD is a unreleased documentary, beautifully shot at The Norah Head Lighthouse and surrounding grounds on NSW’s Central Coast in August 2009. The documentary examines 10 prominent songs from across Josh’s career and provides insights from the talented singer songwriter himself as to what motivated them, what they are about and how they have affected his successful and critically acclaimed career.

Woodford Folk Festival announces 09/10 programme

Woodford Festival
The 24th Woodford Folk Festival programme is as diverse and delightful as ever, with 580 acts gathering in the forested valley of Woodfordia, over the six days between the 27th December and the 1st of January 2010. On offer is an epic journey into a village of contemporary culture celebrating the richness and diversity of many musical genres and art forms, the planet and our own wellbeing.

Whilst Woodford is one of Australia’s largest festivals, the atmosphere remains peaceful and family friendly. The whole festival is set in a parkland, one hour’s drive from Brisbane. The site features treed campgrounds and festival streets lined with 22 venues, 45 restaurants and over 100 stalls.

The Black Eyed Peas return to the top of the ARIA Singles Chart for the third time this year, with the hot tune “’Meet Me Halfway” landing its first week at number one, bringing their tally of Australian No.1 singles up to seven and giving them a total of twenty-eight chart topping weeks. Only Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem have achieved more number ones in the history of the ARIA Charts, with Madonna and Kylie scoring ten each and Delta just behind with eight. Karnivool   Sydney live and radio favourites Regular John who along with opening act Coerce should well and truly get things warmed up and maybe a little kicked in the ass before Karnivool hit the stage.

Karnivool’s rabid fan base has again come out in force with a very healthy uptake for ticket sales for the Sine Waves and Mirrors tour. Melbourne fans will get an extra show with a date added at The Palace Theatre on Thursday December 3rd – tickets for this show are on sale now and the show on Wednesday December 2nd is about to sell out as other shows noted below. Having just completed a hugely successful international tour over the past couple of months Karnivool are fully primed to deliver killer sets for their Australian fans.

CD Review: Dan Parsons – Run With Me

Available at Dan Parsons 		   It’s a little known fact that record companies are the perpetuators of the idea that only by hearing a song can you get it out of your head – which conveniently places it in one thousand other people’s minds when you request it on the radio. Eventually people buy it for an always accessible cure, and thus the song’s place on the charts is secured.

‘Cut Off’, the B side track to ‘Run with Me’, is a song that gets stuck in your mind.

Verses open on drums and vocals, the guitars follow a few bars later, and soon enough the tempo has built up to the four word chorus. Tambourine and piano chords add more interest to the usual instruments that dominate guitar based singles. ‘Cut Off’ could be a stand alone single, as could ‘We Were so Young’, a track which screams ‘our song’ for girls with floral dresses and their childhood sweethearts. The B sides’ quality suggests that when the album is released, it will be an impressive offering.

Prominent Melbourne musician Nicky Bomba (drums and percussion) of ‘Bomba’ fame and principal drummer on ‘Sunrise Over Sea’ joined the band and bass player Byron Luiters from Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three completed the new line up. Having spent the past few months bunkered down in his Fremantle studio with his new band mates putting down tracks for their forthcoming fifth studio album entitled ‘APRIL UPRISING’, John Butler is pleased to announce fans will get their long awaited live JBT hit when the band perform in capital cities, with some key regional shows, in January next year.

Rodrigo y Gabriela Australian Tour – December 2009 / January 2010

Mexico’s breathtaking acoustic guitar duo, ‘Rodrigo y Gabriela’ are returning to play to Australian fans in January 2010 – for the 3rd time after stunning sold out audiences here in 2006 and 2008.

This time, their tour will include appearances at the Falls Festival in Victoria and Tasmania, Sunset Sounds in Brisbane and Southbound Music & Arts Festival in Western Australia – plus theatre side shows at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Sunday 3rd January and the Palais Theatre in Melbourne on Tuesday 5th January.
