Brisbane vocalist Bec Plath has an amazing voice. On her second EP Nightfall she puts her vocal prowess to good use, sweeping through strong melodic rock ballads, with her voice the strongest element of each song.
In addition to her burgeoning solo career, Plath is a member of successful Brisbane band The Bloodpoets and her bandmates have joined her to provide the instrumentals for this EP. |
Things kick off with “Obsession”, an intense track with strong vocals, majestic piano and eerie strings. Plath could have done with some stronger lyrics, but the sheer power of her vocals saves the day. Plath also provides the piano for the piece, playing with prowess.
“What I Was Looking For” is perhaps a stronger song with slightly more complex lyrics and flowing piano that builds into a dramatic instrumental mix. Plath imbues the track with raw emotion and gives a passionate performance that makes you wonder what it would like to see her live. If the level of passion in her voice in this track is anything to go by, it would probably be something spectacular.
“Absent Mind” is more reined in with accomplished strings and flowing piano punctuating the piece which builds dramatically for a strong chorus. Plath’s vocals start out softly and remain held back throughout the song, compared to her other tracks, creating a measured sense of melancholy.
“At The End” is a slow burning track which starts softly and builds in intensity. A dramatic piano intro helps get the song started with Plath ramping up her vocals throughout the song, specifically taking on a sharper quality during the chorus.
Bec Plath has created an accomplished EP full of quality tracks with a dark edge, and powerful vocals. No pop princess, Plath belts out each song with passion. If I have any complaint, it’s that there is a lack of diversity on the album with each track sounding rather similar to those around it. That aside, Plath has a distinct style and brings talent, sheer emotion and technique to her vocals, creating an emotive body of work to make the listener reflect and feel as they are swept away by the music.

Melbournites Alpine (AUS) tread a curious line that lands somewhere between Fleetwood Mac and The XX. As strange a marriage as that sounds, it’s probably the only fitting way to describe songs like their ubiquitous single “Heartlove” – with its jagged rhythm’s and staccato yet harmonic vocals. The track is taken from their recently released Zurich EP – a unique blend of colour soaked electronic synth-pop. |

The Evelyn Hotel is one of the best smaller scaled venues in Melbourne, with many a band’s careers having kick started at the pub. Even band’s like Muse have played there before they found stardom. Therefore it was the perfect place for some of the country’s better young rock bands to show their wares to a decent sized crowd.

Splendour In The Grass has come and gone, but it will live long in the memory of OWL EYES. As well as her surprise onstage collab with ILLY to perform their hit duet It Can Wait, the 20-year-old starlet fulfilled a life dream by meeting musical hero DEVENDRA BANHART. If that weren’t exhilarating enough, the freaky folk troubadour bestowed the highest honour upon our girl by ‘giving’ her his song Owl Eyes – the very song she took her name from. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Returning home safe and star-struck, Owl Eyes was greeted with the very exciting news that her upcoming EP launch at the Northcote Social Club had SOLD OUT. |

The pathways leading to the GW Mclennan Stage were shut down on Saturday when The Jezabels executed their set at Splendour In The Grass, due to too much traffic. Those who did make it in were treated to one of the greatest sets of their career. Having spent a good deal of 2011 touring overseas in the UK, USA, Europe, Canada & Singapore The Jezabels return to stages here at home in October to launch their debut LP Prisoner (in store independently through MGM September 16th 2011).
Powerful, poetic, bold and pure, Prisoner is the first full-length release from the Sydney based quartet. A stunning collection of songs that showcases maturity in song writing, well beyond their young years. |

On Sunday night in Melbourne; Periphery, Tesseract and Twelve Foot Ninja claimed gig of the year. It’s that simple. Upon arriving 20 minutes before the doors opened, in order to get barrier spots, the line to get in was already stretching 75 metres down Swanston St, causing that idea to be promptly dismissed. To put it in perspective, the other shows on this tour were at venues with capacities of 400-500 people and only Sydney managed to sell out.
The Hifi, a 1200 capacity venue, was forced to turn people away after about 8pm. Not a bad effort for a band on their first headline tour of Australia.
