I CALL FIVES (USA) & I AM VILLAIN
Armed with an air tight, high energy live show and a load of irresistibly catchy singalongs, HEROES FOR HIRE will be hitting the road this October for their most extensive headline run to date, with support coming from New Jersey’s own pop punk contenders I CALL FIVES, as well as Brisbane quintet I AM VILLAIN.
Summer Rhythm Festival has landed itself a new time slot. We have moved the festival forward a few months to 9th to 11th of December 2011 this summer due to venue negotiations.
The Summer Rhythm Festival debuted in December 2009 with an outstanding success. In 2011 it was moved to February and went from a small one day event into one of Canberra’s more noteworthy festivals with 3 stages, camping, and markets. The Festival looks to be bigger and better this year and continues to be a not for profit event promoting Mental Health awareness.
THE BOYS began with six girls – who grew up beating the boys in the play ground and singing Nirvana classics into the mirror. They were drawn to one another with the common goal that music of the 2000’s had become too generic – every song sounded like a rip off of another – and wished to bring back the late 1990’s bohemian grunge sound! The Boys revive the grunge scene of the 1990’s with powerful guitar solos, driving synth and passionately, dirty lyrics. They provide an energetic show that’ll bring out the “angsty teen” in every listener. Their influences include: Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Bikini Kill, Garbage, The Breeders and Jeff Buckley.
Poetic, alternative-folk songbird, Kate Martin, has released her new single, Apples, along with a debut music video. Apples is the first single from Kate’s sophomore album, due for release in early 2012.
Since the release of her debut album, Synthetic Shoes, Leather Boots in June last year, Kate and her band The Shallow sea Choir, has been exploring territories outside of her musical comfort zone. The inspiration for this transformation was upon discovering an old Fender Stratocaster in a junk shop in Townsville, Kate’s hometown. Falling in love with a new guitar and a new sound, Kate began writing and recording her new album. 18 months of writing and recording features lush and complex instrumentation, her gifted melodies with beautiful layered harmonies.
Kate Martin has been busily building her live repertoire in the last few years, despite the distance involved in travelling from Townsville in North Queensland. Kate has played alongside The Middle East, The Waifs, Bluejuice, Founds, Little Birdy, Hungry Kids Of Hungary and Ash Grunwald.
The Apples film clip, directed by Timothy Melville (Big Scary, Box Rockets), tells the story of a band adventure in the peaceful countryside of Woodstock, Victoria; filled with road trips, picnics and abandoned houses. The clip reflects of Kate Martin and The Shallow Sea Choir, not only as musicians but as people. You’ll find yourself wanting to pack a bag and go on a trip with this one!
Apples is a taste of the eclectic and intimate upcoming release for Kate Martin, due for national release in early 2012.

Arts Minister Rachel Nolan today announced the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) will deliver a free outdoor simulcast of the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on the Melbourne Street Green.
1977, the dawn of punk, the Misfits were born. This year, over three decades later, they descend on Australia, with a legacy of musical history that has withstood the test of time.
The Misfits hit up Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide in November / December 2011.
From inception, the Misfits were primal. Their music was aggressive, confrontational and dangerous with violent lyrics, coupled with timeless vocal melodies bred from 1950’s rock and roll. Immortalizing black and white horror films in their music, the Misfits developed a ghoulish and totally unique persona. It was the early days of anarchy and they had created a rebellion all of their own. Continue reading The Misfits “Devil’s Rain” Tour – November/December 2011→
Review by Billy Geary Smart, unique alternative rock is becoming somewhat of a rarity in today’s music industry. Only a handful of bands such as Manchester Orchestra, Karnivool and Thrice are prepared to branch out and try something different and still retain an inherent accessibility about them. Given the ever increasing saturation of music worldwide, it often takes something quite special to break out of the rut and create something truly interesting and captivating. What Texan quintet Fair To Midland have achieved with their fourth album Arrows and Anchors, however, is just that Continuing on from where their breakthrough album Fables From a Mayfly left off, Fair To Midland have put together an outstanding album of eclectic rock music, albeit in a heavier fashion this time around. Arrows and Anchors is the natural progression from Fables… in that it improves the band’s overall sound while still retaining what made its predecessor such an excellent release. Tracks such as the utterly magical ‘Golden Parachutes’ and ‘Short Haired Tornado’ are perfect examples of this. In fact, the chorus of ‘Golden Parachutes’ is arguably one of the best rock choruses this year, let alone on the album. Praise must be given to vocalist Darroh Sudderth who possesses one of the best voices in rock music today, as displayed in the aforementioned songs.
