Falls Festival 2013 – Byron Bay – Day 1 Wrap

Review by Merinda O’Brien / Jose Eduardo Cruz
FF13 The inaugural edition of Falls Festival, Byron Bay, launched in the midst of the stunning North Byron Parklands. The parklands, particularly the natural amphitheater in which the main stage is set, are a befitting setting for a festival that has always provided excellent music amongst nature. No doubt Byron Bay has captured the essence and sprit of the festival formerly held in only Lorne and Marion Bay.

Given the heat waves that have been hitting Northern NSW over the last couple of weeks; the crowds in mid afternoon were still very timid. It took British duo, The Correspondents, to begin to warm up the crowd in anticipation for the new year. Their trade mark British sound and high energy immediately enticed a sizable contingent of revelers to the front of the stage.

Live Review: The Roots @ Hordern Pavilion, Sydney – December 27, 2013

Review by Kristie Nicolas
There are few bands that could get away with pulling apart their own songs and reinterpreting them live on stage. There are even fewer bands that could make that sound good. The legendary hip hop crew The Roots are one of them. This past Friday, 27th December, at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney, The Roots took to the stage to show all hip hop heads not only how to successfully do just that but how to go beyond any boundaries put on them by their genre. But did fans really expect anything less from one of hip hop’s most notable groups and the house band of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon? No.

Deafheaven (USA) – Australian Tour – January 2014

Having produced one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year in Sunbather, Deafheaven’s relentless touring sees the band traveling to Australia for the first time ever to play shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth in January 2014.

“With Sunbather… Deafheaven come entirely into their own, delivering a crushing, beautiful record that explores a full spectrum of sounds and emotions” – Kill Your Stereo

As divisive as it is lauded, Deafheaven’s ‘Sunbather’ is a tour de force of aggression and emotion that takes cues from post-rock atmospheres, shoegaze textures and black metal’s unbridled ferocity. Founding members George Clarke (vocals) and Kerry McCoy (guitar) explore the sublime territory first charted by My Bloody Valentine and their contemporaries, before exploding with demonic screams, furious blast beats and punishing guitar riffs.

Live Review: Melvins + Helmet + Nunchukka Superfly @ Hi-Fi Bar, Sydney – December 15, 2013

Words and Pics: Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au
We were shocked to see no line up for tonight’s show, just moments before opening time. There were literally 15 people waiting patiently in front of Sydney’s HiFi, with crowds of soccer fans streaming past at from Allianz Stadium wondering what these scruffy metal heads were doing out in public on a Sunday evening. Thankfully though, all this lack of early enthusiasm proved to be was a more mature, clever kind of music fan that clearly hates waiting in lines.

By the time Sydney’s own Nunchukka Superfly were around half way through their crunching set of jam-room super grooves the HiFi was more than half full – as if a couple of busloads of punters had miraculously all arrived at once. Their insistent, explosive riffing got the early crowd moving, with spasmodic, jagged physical contortions on stage reinforcing the powerful movements of the music. Be sure to look for the band’s forthcoming album “Open Your Eyes to Smoke” being launched at Valve on December 21 – their first since 2008.

RYAN KEEN (UK) announces first Australian headline shows!

Touring Australia for the first time in January, supporting Busby Marou on their coastal tour, English singer-songwriter RYAN KEEN has just announced two intimate headline shows to showcase songs from his debut album “Room For Light”.

After spending the last 14 months playing support slots with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Leona Lewis and Plan B, finishing over 260 gigs including headline shows, and being the only unsigned act to appear on the iTunes festival lineup, RYAN KEEN’s debut appearance in Australia will be his fans first chance to see the artist perform in an intimate setting.

On his debut album, “Room For Light” – which was self-funded and recorded, largely in a small shed in his garden – Ryan explores the light and shade of life and love, with a series of songs that are remarkable for their subtly rich arrangements and his intimate style of playing and singing – you can hear him draw breath and feel the scrape of his fingers on the fretboard.

Interview with Luke Liang – Papa Vs Pretty

Interview by Stuart Blythe
Sydney rockers Papa Vs Pretty recently released their latest single “Smother”, taken from their anticipated second album, White Deer Park.

Life Music Media caught up with Luke Liang (Guitar, Keyboards) of Papa Vs Pretty for a quick chat about their new album “White Deer Park”

LMM: Your new album White Deer Park is due for release early next year.  How was the recording process and working with David Trumfio?

Luke: Dave was amazing. He’s really easy to get along with, he’s obviously brilliant (check out Wilco and My Morning Jacket!) and he really drove us in the right way. What I mean is that he made us feel at ease personally but pushed us out of our comfort zone musically – that balance really helped us to create something great during the recording process.

THE ROLLING STONES Touring Australia – March/April 2014

THE ROLLING STONES
ANNOUNCE 14 ON FIRE ONE NIGHT ONLY CONCERTS
SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, BRISBANE, PERTH, HANGING ROCK & AUCKLAND
#StonesOnFire

It’s no great surprise but tickets to see The Rolling Stones one night only 14 ON FIRE concerts in March have been snapped up in just minutes today.

Only limited ticket packages now remain for each show.

Promoter Michael Gudinski said “The Rolling Stones have proven yet again why they are one of the biggest rock acts in the world.

“With the shows strictly limited it was inevitable that tickets would sell quickly. With just a limited number of ticket packages remaining, fans will want to get in fast before these shows sell out completely.”

Fans are reminded that the only authorised ticketing outlets for The Rolling Stones are Ticketek and Ticketmaster. Frontier strongly recommends that you purchase tickets from the authorised ticketing outlets only and not from scalpers who may use auction or other retail sites such as eBay, Viagogo and Eventbrite, amongst others to sell tickets. If you purchase tickets from an unauthorised seller, you run the risk of being supplied with a ‘fake’ ticket or the ticket not being provided at all.

“Despite claims from many of these unauthorised sellers that they will guarantee tickets, evidence from numerous tours would suggest this is not the case, with many fans being defrauded or left standing outside a venue without legitimate tickets. I cannot stress the importance of buying tickets from authorised outlets only,” Michael Gudinski said.

….

Hot on the heels of the news that The Rolling Stones will open Adelaide Oval, comes confirmation of another six spectacular Rolling Stones shows for Australia and New Zealand. Frontier Touring & AEG Live unveil a string of very special ONE NIGHT ONLY shows in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland and Victoria’s iconic Hanging Rock as part of the 14 ON FIRE Tour.

Tickets for all shows go on sale to the general public on Monday 16 December, with a pre-sale via frontiertouring.com/rollingstones from Monday 9 December.

Mick Jagger commented: “Can’t wait to reconnect with all our friends in Australia & New Zealand. It’s been a while since we’ve played to you all, so we are looking forward to being back on stage & playing your favourite songs.”

Live Review: METRIC @ The Tivoli, Brisbane – December 11, 2013

Review by Lauren Sherritt for Life Music Media

With sustained global popularity for over a decade, Metric have a wide fan-base to pull from when it comes to filling a show’s audience. Their loyal Brisbane following heard the call for the Wednesday night leg of Metric’s “Synthetica” tour, and a diverse crowd filled The Tivoli on one of those muggy Brisbane nights where even inside the busy venue it was cooler than sweating in the soupy air outside. The warm weather didn’t seem to affect the Canadian quartet, though, as they hit the stage in their trademark cool style.

Live Review: Alicia Keys + John Legend @ Allphones Arena, Sydney – December 11, 2013

Review by Kristie Nicolas

A double billing doesn’t happen very often here in Australia, let alone in the often neglected genre of R&B. but this past Wednesday, at Allphones Arena that’s just what Sydney-siders were treated to. They turned up in droves to see R&B darling Alicia Keys perform, along with special guest John Legend on the Set The World On Fire tour.

Legend took to the stage as the crowd was streaming in for the show. For many artists this could very well throw them off. But Legend seemed to take this as a challenge. And boy, did he rise to the task. Opening with the percussive, electronic styling of ‘Made To Love’, from his latest album, Love In The Future, Legend and his band came out in fine form. They remained that way through out, not swayed even for a moment by the bright lights on the audience. Legend gave a spirited and high energy performance, supported by his band and stunning backing vocalists, who almost stole the show with their sassy choreographed moves and vocals. While Legend proved a more than competent show man, it was in the stripped down moments that he really shone. Sitting at the grand piano that adorned the centre of the stage, Legend gave the audience a lesson in heartfelt crooning. Whether covering Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”, tear-jerker “Ordinary People” or the current number one song in the country, “All Of Me”, Legend’s performance was pure perfection.

EL DRUGSTORE to release “Plague Ship”

Following a colossal three year-long writing and pre-production process, New Jersey’s instrumental freak attack trio, EL DRUGSTORE, has put the final touches on their virgin romp on full-length turf.

Devised by the corrupted intellect of guitarist Kevin Conway (ex-East of the Wall), drummer Seth Rheam (East of the Wall) and bassist Rolando Alvarado, Keyport, New Jersey-based EL DRUGSTORE has been discharging their mangled, aggro-technical metallic racket since 2008. The band’s debut recording, a split full-length with cohorts A Fucking Elephant, marked the inauguration of their conjoined independent label, Nefarious Industries in 2011.
