Joan as Police Woman has been as restless as ever since her last sold-out Australian tour in 2011, and the release of that year’s classic album The Deep Field. She’s starred in a BBC produced celebration of the music of Sandy Denny. Joan also appeared on Orchestral Variations V.01 by The Separate (aka producer / engineer Rob Kirwan), reimaging the Smiths’ The Night Has Opened My Eyes. But most crucially she’s returned to the studio to create her most striking LP yet, The Classic. Critics and fans are united in their praise of an album that one scribe said was best experienced with lights out, eyes closed, headphones on. This is music to get lost in.

Within seconds of Ignition’s lacerating opening riff, you know what you’re in for. Behind Waleed Aly’s slamming guitars (RN Drive, The Project), and Jeff Wortman’s (Peanut Gallery, Triple M) vocals, a siren wails and a spoken voice warns us that desperate people do desperate things. Soon the rhythm section arrives and we’re off: the track is surging and the stakes are high.

Their playing style has broken down the boundaries between different genres of music, from classical and film music to pop and rock. 2CELLOS have no limits when it comes to performing live and are equally as impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out, as evidenced in the recent mind-blowing clip of their version of the AC/DC track Thunderstruck.

It’s a gorgeous Thursday evening in the Queensland capital, the smell of the rain still hanging in the crisp air after an earlier downpour. Following a brisk walk to the Tempo, we are met with a killer blast of noise: that’s Hope Drone, eagerly conforming to their moniker by dousing the venue with bucketfuls of post-black metal (yep – everything is “post” these days) and death growls. It’s not all Cookie Monster-esque bluster, though – the quartet aren’t shy on melody and have their cleans and atmospherics down pat.
