Interview with Garry “Gaz” Jennings of Cathedral
Interview: Billy Geary
We caught up with Cathedral guitarist Garry “Gaz” Jennings for a quick chat about Soundwave 2012 – the last shows they’ll be performing together…
LMM: It’s been confirmed that the Soundwave tour would be your last ever tour together. What was the reasoning behind making Soundwave Soundwave your last set of shows together?
Garry “Gaz” Jennings: The last ever show was supposed to be the London show but about 2 days after we announced the gig this offer came in which was to good to turn down so we accepted and then announced the London show as the last uk show.
LMM: Does anyone in the band plan on moving onto other musical projects after Cathedral finishes up, or is this completely it for you guys in terms of playing professionally?
GJ: I think we will all continue in some shape or form whether it’s doing it professional or for fun. Brian has a side project already and they do quite alot of gigs and Scott will still play with Repulsion. Lee has his label and I’m sure he may get involved in some projects along the way. As for myself I’ll probably continue to play the guitar for fun but will not join or form a band. I may do a solo project at some point. I have loads of ideas which have never been used but I’m to lazy to do anything with them.
LMM: What are you most looking forward to about doing Soundwave 2012?
GJ: Just getting over there and playing and enjoying the fact that it’s the last time we will play together.

INLAND SEA announce new single, video and festival appearances
INLAND SEA are finishing up 2011 with a bang, releasing a new video, single and festival dates all in one go.
“The Only One” builds from a bluesy beginning into a boisterous rock’n’roll sound. It is accompanied by a video inspired by soul groups of the 50’s and 60’s and the all too common question asked of the band, “Ten people- don’t you fight?”

Brisbane International honours Evonne Goolagong Cawley
The Brisbane International women’s singles trophy was today named in honour of one of Australia’s greatest ever tennis players, Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
“Evonne, who was ranked in the top 10 for nine years and finished her career with multiple grand slam titles, was the obvious choice to name the women’s trophy after”, Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said today.
“She has contributed so much to the game during her career and continues to do so with her National Development Camp and work with indigenous youth.
“We felt it was only appropriate that we recognise Evonne’s contribution to the sport and there was no better way to do this than to name the women’s championship trophy in her honour.”
Goolagong Cawley said today that “it is an amazing honour to have the Brisbane International trophy named after me”.
“I have won a few trophies in my time but I have never had a major event name their trophy after me. This is particularly special as it is for a Queensland event, one that I love and also the state that I call home.

Nik Lone – These Pictures Won’t Tell | Album Review
Review by Victoria Nugent
It’s not often that the phrase mind blowing can be used justifiably but Nik Lone’s debut album is one instance where other descriptions just don’t quite suffice. From the very first seconds of play the music is hauntingly melancholy and incredibly beautiful. I can imagine Lone doing live performances to crowd with tear tracks weaving down their cheeks. That’s how much of an emotional impact Lone’s compositions make.
It’s unbelievable that Lone never had formal musical training and instead taught himself to sing, creating unique acappellla songs during his teen years. After pursuing a career in science, Lone start to really develop his music in the mid 2000s, backed by short lived band Goodnight Thomas. In 2006 Lone released the EP Close, spawning more frequent performances, festival appearances and a US tour.

FLAP! @ Camelot Lounge, Sydney – 17 December 2011 | Live Review
Review and Photos by Robert Pugsley
FLAP! are a swing jazz, calypso, brassy, five piece who have a reputation for getting the audiences pulses racing , their feet moving and their clothes off (yes, mass nudity at two gigs…so far). With Jess on vocals/tiny banjo, Eamon on vocals/trumpet, Ben on drums, Mark on double bass and Don on trombone, they succeeded with the pulses and the dancing but thankfully there was no nudity.
FLAP! is not the typical band we’ve reviewed, they are an eclectic Jazz band but don’t let that put you off. They can provide a backbeat that will have your head bobbing, your hips moving and your feet shuffling. Hell you may even join in with audience and try some swing dancing!

Carthasy – Crawl | Video Clip
Some bands try very hard to please you. Carthasy are not one of those bands. They have emerged from the depths of the studio with acclaimed producers Matt Gio and Forrester Savell, bearing an EP that is dense, rich, and ambitious. Carthasy’s experimental hard rock doesn’t subscribe to any formula: schizophrenic two-minute assaults hold an uncomfortable truce with atmospheric seven-minute slow-burners. Chunks of sludge metal, slivers of post-rock and wedges of prog get thrown together at dizzying speed. The common thread through it all is a sense of restraint, a love of melody, and a total lack of ego. Carthasy owe influence to Deftones, Isis, Karnivool, Tool and Oceansize, but owe allegiance to no scene or target market. Have a listen with an open mind. You might have to make an effort, but you know the rewards will be worth it.
Enter Shikari Sidewaves!
ENTER SHIKARI continues to defy those who dare seek to pigeonhole them.
Their frenzied live shows have gone down in folklore, with NME declaring frontman Rou Reynolds is a man “set on destroying everything: the speakers, the monitors, the Barfly, himself, our ear-drums and, most impressively, the divide between band and fan.”
ENTER SHIKARI are performing 2 headline shows only on the back of their Soundwave 2012 appearances and Australian fans will be amongst the first in the world to hear new tracks from the bands forthcoming album ‘A Flash Flood Of Colour”.
Channeling the frantic intensity of The Blood Brothers, awe inspiring sonic complexity of At the Drive In, the unrestrained emotion of Glassjaw and industrial strength hardcore of Refused, LETLIVE are injecting new blood into the scene with their latest record ‘Fake History’…”Consistently thrilling and invigorating it’s a phenomenal record that’s worthy of all praise.” – Rock Sound
