Interview with Mark Lowndes

Interview by Stuart Blythe
It’s been a busy year for singer/songwriter Mark Lowndes. Performing *and reaching the finals* on Australia’s Got Talent, recording his latest EP “Present”, running workshops for younger musicians and recently kicking off on an extensive tour. Life Music Media caught up with Mark for a chat.

LMM: Hi Mark, it was great to see you performing and reaching the finals on Australia’s Got Talent.
It must have been a great experience?

Mark: It was an experience that I will never forget.
So many things I learnt behind the scenes about the commercial world, things I’ll never forget.

LMM: Your song “Afternoon” received rave reviews from the judges. How did you feel about that and how much do you take on board from their comments?

Mark: Of course it was a good feeling to get such good feedback for ‘Afternoon’ but in my head I was already prepared for whatever comments they gave.
I liked the song before anyone or any panel did – so I was content.

LMM: Do you think shows such as Australia’s Got Talent are essential in the Australian musical landscape?

Mark: I’m not sure if shows like these are essential, but I was very lucky to have showcased original material.
Playing your own original music to me is essential.

LMM: You do a lot of work with younger musicians through workshops. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Mark: High school visits are a big part of my giving back to the world.
I work alongside the chaplains, guidance officers and youth organizations to inspire the many gifted students who are overflowing with creative potential.
Encouraging to use the gift for good.

LMM: What would be the biggest obstacle as an artist in the music industry today?

Mark: I don’t think there is any major obstacle to overcome except ourselves.
There are plenty of people, facilities and  creative arts centers around offering help to many artists.
Laziness is probably the only real obstacle.

LMM: If you were starting out as a musician today, what advise would you give your younger self?

Mark: The advice I would give would be don’t lose nor forget that passion and love you have for music.
Use it to make a difference.

LMM: “Afternoon” is off your latest EP “Present”. How is “Present” different from your previous recording?

Mark: It’s different in the sense I only had 2 days to do it. The previous EP I had a whole month.
I was more confident going back into the studio though, which was a lot easier for the recording process.

LMM: I understand you have a nationwide tour kicking off. Can you fill us in with the details?

Mark: Yes I’m touring with another beautiful local artist ‘Bec Laughton’
We’ll be visiting mostly the main cities in Australia and New Zealand.
