Interview with David Rogers – Nantes

Interview by Stuart Blythe
It’s been a busy year for Sydney duo Nantes and with their debut album on its way, they look set to be even busier. Life Music Media caught up with vocalist/bassist David Rogers for a chat…

LMM: You’ve been in the studio working on your debut album. How was the recording process and working with producer Simon Todkill?

David: It was a really relaxed process getting this album together, we weren’t stressing on making sure everything was perfect, we were trying to record as purely as possible, we were trying to capture the essence of how the songs were written. Working with Simon is great because he’s a good friend of mine so there are no awkward moments; he usually molests me at some point.

LMM: Singles ‘Fly’ and ‘Unsatisfy’ have been well received and been on high-rotation. For the uninitiated, how do you describe your sound?

David: This is a question we get asked a lot, and I still don’t know how to answer it very well. I’d say its somewhere around a synth pop alternative rock. Think the B52’s mixed with a washing machine.

LMM: USA college radio stations are also spinning tracks from your debut EP. Is a tour of the US on the cards?

David: It’s something we would love to do, and hopefully we can do sooner rather than later… If anyone wants to fly us there, that would really help…

LMM: Which bands did you grow up with, and who still inspires you now?

David: A couple of bands but one that inspires me the most would have to be Radiohead. Yes – I’m one of those guys.

LMM: The Band has signed with peermusic, how did that come about?

David: A couple of bands but one that inspires me the most would have to be Radiohead. Yes – I’m one of those guys.

LMM: The band has played some major festivals (Parklife, Peats Ridge, Pyramid and Big Day Out). How was the festival experience?

David: Festivals are always fun, you get to play (in our case) in front of a lot more people than we usually see, and its such a great way to check out other bands.

LMM: Do you prefer playing the festivals or more intimate venue shows?

David: Both have their pros and cons.

LMM: You’ve got a few performances coming up. Would you like to say anything to our readers ahead of the shows?
David: Come out to a show, we promise it will be more fun than cleaning your bedroom.
