Interview with Andrew Levy – The Brand New Heavies

Interview: Stuart Blythe
Legendary British soul funk pioneers The Brand New Heavies return to Australia this September *2012*, playing intimate venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The Brand New Heavies’ bassist Andrew Levy chats to LifeMusicMedia.com

LMM: Hi Andrew, you’ll be performing in Australia this September. What can we expect from your shows?

Andrew: Australia can expect a High Gloss performances from the funk/soul band that delivers like a rock band. A taste of some new material too…. Don’t worry all the hits you know and love will be on the set list as usual!

LMM: Do you have any special memories of past Australian visits?

Andrew: There was a lot of dancing on bars at after-show parties, meeting Gok Wan and Danni Minogue back stage at Trak too :)

LMM: How do Australian audiences compare to other parts of the world?

Andrew: It’s bit like the UK crowd but sexier and louder!!

LMM: For the uninitiated, how do you describe your sound/music?

Andrew: It’s essentially Dance Music tinged with a funky soulful Groove, it’s topped off by one of the worlds best singers N’Dea Davenport.
If you like quality dance music, come on down!

LMM: You’re last recorded offering was a free EP download earlier this year.
Can we expect any new albums in the near future?

Andrew: Feb 2013 is the official release date of our new Record with a taste EP in October

LMM: What would be the biggest obstacle as an artist in the music industry today?

Andrew: Having the right people around you is paramount, we have suffered by not being too accepting with ‘wanna be’ managers in the past we have found the best there is for our goals in the form of Nick Yeatman.

LMM: If you were starting out as a young musician today, what advise would you give your younger self?

Andrew: Write your own songs as much as possible and work twice as hard as you think you need to, there are a lot of people with laptops trying to do the same thing so be different and know your strengths.

LMM: Early in your career, you mention being inspired by the likes of James Brown, The Meters and Donald Byrd.
Who inspires you these days?

Andrew: I’m inspired by music from the 70s because it was so well put together back then. We play our instruments and write our songs so it’s a great starting place for ideas. Todays music is equally inspirational, I love Adele’s song writing, Ri Ri’s Poptasticness, also love Swedish House Mafia and LMFAO…. so listen to everything because one never knows what one will find out there :)

LMM: You’re kicking off your Australian shows on September 6th.
Anything you would like to say to your Australian fans ahead of the tour?

Andrew: Get some sleep, we like to party!!
