Cold Chisel fans stormed ticket outlets across Australia and New Zealand from 9.00am today to be part of the legendary band’s Light The Nitro Tour that will take place through October-December this year.
Today’s sales are believed to be the highest ever recorded by an Australian based band. |
Over 155,000 tickets were snapped up by noon. This eclipses the band’s own legendary “Last Stand” tour. It’s also beyond the first day’s sales of both Powderfinger’s farewell ‘Sunsets’ tour of last year and the Across The Great Divide tour (Silverchair/Powderfinger) in 2007.
Shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Canberra and Wollongong were officially SOLD OUT by 10.00am, with the band immediately adding second shows in Townsville (Tuesday, 18 October), Brisbane (Wednesday, 2 November), Sydney (Acer Arena, Wednesday, 9 November) and Adelaide (Wednesday, 30 November).
Reacting to the massive sales, Cold Chisel agreed this morning to try to extend the tour for a few days beyond what was originally planned. The band has asked Melbourne fans to stay calm and stay tuned. The band will definitely add an additional date in Melbourne in early December. A confirmed date will hopefully be announced in the next 48 hours as the group’s managers scramble to confirm venue availabilities. The band has also been besieged by Perth fans who are screaming for more and we are looking at all options.
Across the Tasman, tickets also went gangbusters, with Auckland and Wellington registering huge sales. Wellington is almost sold out and Auckland sales are the hottest so far this year.
For the first time, Cold Chisel will play a handful of winery shows and these saw an equal fan frenzy, as shows at the Bimbadgen Estate in the Hunter Valley, the Robert Oatley Vineyard, Mudgee and the Rochford Winery, Yarra Valley all sold out by 10.00am – an extremely rare feat for these large outdoor venues.
When Perth came online at 9.00am local time, the band’s Belvoir Amphitheatre show sold out in 10 minutes while Sandalford Winery saw unprecedented sales and by midday WA time. Over 10,000 were sold for the band’s show at Sandalford Winery at Margaret River.
In Adelaide, Cold Chisel‘s birthplace, after selling out their first Adelaide Entertainment Centre, the band announced a second show which promptly sold out by 11.00am. The second show, on Wednesday, 30 November will be a special homecoming for Cold Chisel, with Tim Prestwich Band confirmed as the support. Tim is the brother of Cold Chisel‘s drummer Steve Prestwich who died unexpectedly earlier this year of a brain tumour. The band is looking at alternatives in early December for a third Adelaide show. These huge ticket sales come in a week where Cold Chisel have nine albums in the ARIA Top 100 Albums Chart and four songs in the ARIA Top 100 Singles Chart, including the classic Khe Sanh which has hit the national Top 40 for the first time ever.
Earlier, Cold Chisel issued a statement after becoming aware that tickets were being resold at hugely inflated prices on various sites, such as eBay and Facebook. Powerless to stop this action, the band know that some tickets being offered for sale are either not legitimate or are making false and misleading representations. The band implored fans not to purchase unauthorised tickets as their validity cannot be guaranteed.
