We’re thrilled to welcome Commedia Dell Southbound to our 2016 program! Our good friends at JumpClimb, the creative team behind the likes of the Beaufort Street Festival and award winning Fringe World Venues Noodle Palace and Midlandia have carefully curated this special space in conjunction with one of Perth’s most renowned showmen, Tomas Ford.
In the aftermath of the 2015 festival, you guys spoke and Southbound listened. It was a legendary effort from all in attendance who were sweating it out last year in the blistering WA heat, so in 2016 we’ve not only decided to add a whole lot of shade to compensate – in true Southbound fashion we’ve gone over the top. We’ve added an entire big top tent that will provide an oasis of shade from the sun, as well as house a whole new program of delicious food, drinks and entertainment.
Featuring a craft beer bar and wood fired pizza kitchen, the big tent will be a destination rather than a compensation, and will feature a handpicked assortment of comedy, burlesque and circus style performances from some of the most innovative and creative artists from Australia and abroad that together will be Commedia Dell Southbound!
Dr Professor Neal Portenza (VIC) is one of the international comedy festival scene’s most notorious comic madmen. Having played to sold out crowds at festivals in Edinburgh, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Perth’s Fringe World, his shows are gloriously chaotic, brain-bendingly interactive and hours of lunatic fun.
A smash hit at comedy festivals around Australia, Dave Warneke’s Facty Fact Game Show (VIC) is a ridiculous combination of absurd tasks, pointless questions and laugh out loud jokes that will leave you a mess of giggles. While Adam Peter Scott’s Trivia Death Match faces comedians against each other in an all-out war of movie and pop culture trivia with hilarious results.
There will also be stand-up comedy LOLs from Mike G (USA), Nicole Henriksen (NSW), Dave Warneke (VIC), and locals Ayden Doherty, Cameron McLaren and Adam Peter Scott.
Meanwhile, Sugar Blue Burlesque will be brining sexy back as Perth’s leading burlesque troupe. Ruby Slippers, Fifi Fontaine, Lucy Lovegun and Coco Poppin have built a reputation for their salacious shows, and will bring their latest tantalizing acts to close out Commedia Dell Southbound on Friday and Saturday nights.
We can’t say parts of the show won’t be a total drag however, with appearances from Attack Of The Drag Queens – four of Perth’s most exciting drag acts taking a Priscilla-style road trip to Southbound to put on a floorshow so glam it would make Ru Paul blush – and Bingay! bingo… with balls! Glorious drag queen BarbieQ hosts the smash hit, sell-out of Fringe World and weekly smash at Connections Nightclub and if you get your numbers right, you could be walking away with your very own dildo!
The music won’t stop in the shade either. Stalwart Perth hip hop scene emcee Empty will be bringing his rap face-off Openbars to Southbound with a crew of Perth’s most exciting emerging rappers, while all of us will get the chance to unleash our inner Beyoncé, when the Bey Dance Workshop (VIC) schools us on how to move like Queen B herself. With a different song to learn each day, get in early to score your spot on the dance floor!
There will also be a surprising round of Superstar Karaoke, Ayden Doherty will lead the inaugural Naked Race around the Commedia Dell Southbound tent, Mac The Comedy Computer will deploy his depressingly programmed stand-up comedy skills, Pirateman & Jake Firebrand will combine fire juggling, boylesque and circus tomfoolery, and the Crap Music Rave Jukebox will see some of Perth’s cabaret madman fulfilling your song requests – so long as they’re crap.
So swing by the big top this Southbound festival and be set to eat, drink and celebrate all things weird and wonderful with Commedia Dell Southbound!
