Interview with DANDY WARHOLS guitarist PETER HOLSTROM – Australian Tour, Cash and Creativity

Interview by: Dermot Clarke
DANDY WARHOLS guitarist PETER HOLSTROM chats briefly about the band’s upcoming Australian tour (2011), and the way cash and creativity affect each other.
“It felt like after we did Parklife we hadn’t really performed to our fans,” a laid-back sounding Peter Holstrom says.

“We’d performed to a lot of people who were going to a dance music festival, and that was fun and great but we needed to come back and do shows for our fans, the ones who didn’t want to spend however much it was for a festival ticket to just see a few bands that they might like on it.”

The decadent rock outfit’s strong touring relationship with Australia can be traced back to their visit in 2000, on the back of their landmark album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. When they walked onstage for their Livid Festival set, they were met with such a screaming wall of white noise from the audience that they changed their set list on the spot, opening with the high-paced feedback dirge “Fast Driving Raveup With the Dandy Warhols”.

ARIA Chart News: w/c 11 April 2011

For the first time this year, a local act has triumphed at the peak of the ARIA Album Chart, Perth’s Drapht enjoying his first taste of number one success! His new album “The Life Of Riley” has held off all comers to triumph in top spot, easily eclipsing his previous album chart effort of #64 with “Brothers Grimm” in June 2008.

Snoop Dogg delivers his second ARIA Singles Chart #1, with “Sweat (David Guetta Remix)” moving up from #2 this week to bump Jennifer Lopez into second spot. It’s almost six years since Snoop’s previous ARIA #1 single, “Signs”, which spent two weeks at the top of the chart in May 2005.

Sparkadia @ The Hi-Fi, Brisbane – April 08, 2011 [Live Review]

Review by: Lauren Sherritt
I headed to Sparkadia’s show on Friday April 8 at the Hi Fi in Brisbane with much the same feeling of trepidation that I had on hearing that the band was releasing a new album in March this year. Technically, I knew that the songs on the record were superb, just as I knew that the hype building about the The Great Impression tour and Sparkadia’s new live show had to mean something. I was troubled, though, by clear memories of a gig on the eighteenth of September in 2008 that had changed the way I viewed live music and made me worried that there was only disappointment to come by way of comparison.

My Own Pet Radio – Unidentified Flying Collection of Songs [Album Review]

Review by: Lauren Sherritt

Unidentified Flying Collection of Songs is the first album released by My Own Pet Radio, the name under which Brisbane artist Sam Cromack works solo. The bedroom recorded, experimental album is a solid example of decent, hard worked music created by a passionate and hard working musician.

Cromack, also known as the front man for indie rock/pop band Ball Park Music, really goes to town on the album cutting samples, employing effects and layering instruments, all played by himself, with intricate and distinct lyrics. The songs collectively move through various styles, bluesy influences sitting alongside poppy rock and folksy, lilting acoustic pieces. Carefully crafted to fit together as a whole album, the spectrum of styles in the songs speaks of the years of work gone into developing Cromack’s skill, and the album transcends the hyped world of sale figures and radio play stats to sit as a thought provoking piece of artwork.

Destroy Music feat. The Amity Affliction and I Killed The Prom Queen – May 2011 [Tour News]

Heavy music fans in Australia are set for yet another treat this year with Destroy Music – a festival headlined by The Amity Affliction and a recently reformed I Killed the Prom Queen. The undercard is just as unrelenting, featuring Deez Nuts and US band Of Mice and Men.

For The Amity Affliction, Destroy Music marks the band’s first Australian capital cities headline tour since hitting the road last July on the back of their sophomore release “Youngbloods”. Since then they have notched up two UK tours, a mainland European run and returned home to play to tens of thousands of people on the recently completed Soundwave Festival, where they turned heads as the Australian heroes on a 70 band bill. They’ve scored a #6 ARIA debut, multiple magazine covers, topped almost every heavy music poll, had Triple J singles and garnered ARIA and AIR nominations for “Youngbloods”. The Amity Affliction juggernaut is showing no sign of slowing down either. In March and April they will embark on their first ever US tour, taking in close to 40 dates, including SXSW, before returning to Australian shores for Destroy Music.

Tim Barry @ Rosies, Brisbane – 02 April 2011 w/ Wollard and Burns, Jud Campbell [Live Review]

Review by: Stephen Goodwin

Some invisible barrier seems to prevent punters from encroaching closer than five metres from where local Jud Campbell is punching out a solid set of folk-punk. Maybe he has cooties, because a little later everyone is crowding the stage’s edge as if to hear every muted note and whispered vocal in Wollard and Burns’ back-porch set.

Stage’s edge is still too distant for Tim Barry. Early on, the American drops the lead from his acoustic and plays unplugged amidst the crowd, harnessing their enthusiasm for a sing-along full of roaring voices and grinning faces.

Artist applications open for Woodford Folk Festival 2011/12

WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL OPENS EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR ARTISTS

Expressions of interest are now open to Artists and Presenters for the 26th Woodford Folk Festival. Held annually between the 27th December and 1st January, the Woodford Folk Festival is one of Australia’s largest outdoor music events.

The festival invites interest from musicians, as well as artists, presenters and speakers for specialist programmes such as circus, vaudeville, the high profile environmental and health programmes, comedy, traditional folkloric, spoken word, workshops and visual arts.

Having endured their wettest year on record and sustained significant damage due to the Queensland floods, event producers the Queensland Folk Federation earlier announced that this year’s Woodford Folk Festival will feature a precinct dedicated to the prestigious International Indigenous festival, The Dreaming. Artists wishing to be a part of the Dreaming precinct can apply via the Woodford Folk Festival process.

All artists and presenters wishing to be a part of the Festival must complete an online Expression of Interest, now open online via the Woodford Folk Festival website: www.woodfordfolkfestival.com and will close at 5pm on Friday 20th May 2011. Applicants cannot be considered without a complete online application.
