Trial Kennedy – “Living Undesigned” – Album Review

Review by: Luke Sutton

Living Undesigned - Trial KennedyLiving Undesigned
Living Undesigned, the sophomore release from Trial Kennedy is truly a work of sheer blood, sweat and tears. Debut effort New Manic Art was one of my fave independent releases of recent times. It was fresh and exciting, classic rock with a bit of an alternate vibe going for it.

Unfortunately, due to devastating personal life issues (heart surgery, label issues etc) Living Undesigned feels as though it has been king hit and knocked off of it’s feet. And yet Trial Kennedy have climbed back up out of the rubble, defining the odds and producing an album that manages to retain the bands unique sound and produce something new at the same time.

Elbow return to Australia for their first shows since 2009. – July 2011 – Tour News

Elbow return to Australia for their first shows since 2009.

Guy Garvey will lead the Mancurian five piece in three headline shows this July – in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney – ahead of their appearance at Splendour In The Grass.

Tickets for the headline shows go on sale Friday May 27.

This year Elbow have delivered another collection of lush, orchestral and typically graceful sounds, complimented by Garveyʼs gravelly, emotive vocals – ʻBuild A Rocket Boys!ʼ.

Debuting at #13 in Australia, ʻBuild A Rocket Boys!ʼ is their fifth studio album in a ten-year-plus career, and follows earlier offerings, the critically acclaimed ʻAsleep In The Backʼ, ʻCast of Thousandsʼ, ʻLeaders of the Free Worldʼ and ʻThe Seldom Seen Kidʼ.

It was in 2008 – 09 that commercial success finally caught up to the peer adulation and critical acclaim Elbow had long been receiving.

The release of their fourth studio album ʻThe Seldom Seen Kidʼ made the world take note, earning numerous accolades, amongst them the 2008 Mercury Music Prize, Ivor Novello awards and the 2009 Brit Award for Best British Band.

During this time Elbow delivered stand-out performances at V Festival Australia 2009, along with three sold out sideshows, Beat Magazine declaring a “near God experience” and Inpress exclaiming “this is an evening of triumph”.

Donʼt miss the return of one of Britianʼs most beloved bands, Elbow, performing at:

PERTH – METRO CITY – MONDAY JULY 25
MELBOURNE – PALACE THEATRE – WEDNESDAY JULY 27

Young The Giant – Self titled release out, performing at Splendour in The Grass 2011

Young The Giant – Self titled release out, performing at Splendour in The Grass 2011

So who are Young The Giant? Young the Giant write the sort of soaring, melodic rock ‘n’ roll that has punters asking ‘who are these guys’ the very first time they hear them.

Hailing from Southern California, to begin writing for their self titled debut, the five members moved into a house together on the ocean in Newport Beach, which they say provided inspiration for their self titled

album: the concept of an endless, eternal summer, of youthfulness and doing what you love most. The band lived on the beach for about seven months, then relocated to a West Hollywood where they began working with producer Joe Chiccarelli, whose work for artists like the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and My Morning Jacket they admired (My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster actually guests on keys on several of the album’s tracks).

EMMURE AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2011 – WITH SPECIAL GUESTS – SHINTO KATANA and DREAM ON, DREAMER

Having had to postpone their January tour of Australia, New York’s most notorious live metal band Emmure have announced they will finally be making the long anticipated return down under for their first ever headline shows this June.

Since their inception in 2003, Emmure have released one EP, four studio albums and constantly toured the US and overseas garnering a legion of new fans with every show they play. Now, on the back of the band’s fourth studio album “Speaker of the Dead” released worldwide in February, the band is back on the road and keen to demonstrate to Australian fans why they have already earned the support of an army of fans across the globe. After starting 2010 supporting Machine Head, Hatebread and Bleeding Through on their Australian tour, and ending the year playing shows with Parkway Drive, Comeback Kid and Bleeding through, Emmure are well and truly warmed up and ready to destroy Australia in June 2011.

Joining Emmure on this brutal eleven-date tour will be Sydney heavyweights Shinto Katana and Melbourne’s Dream On, Dreamer.

Having completed tours with The Red Shore and Shai Hulud in 2010 as well as releasing ‘We Can’t Be Saved’ the crushing follow up to 2008 debut album ‘Cold Streets’, Shinto Katana started 2011 with a tour with Deez Nuts as well as headline runs. Shinto Katana are just getting started, by June they will be truly devastating.

Dream On, Dreamer may be one of the newer acts in Australian Hardcore / Metal scene, but in a short space of time they have managed to create a lot of noise. Between tours supporting Attack Attack and Deez Nuts, their “Hope” EP has had outstanding sales and the band is getting ready to release their debut album ‘Heartbound’ in July with first single “Downfall” will be out at the start of June.

June 2011 will see Emmure punish Australian audiences with their blistering combination of hardcore spirit and metal aggression, high energy live performances and a dedication to excellence. Emmure, Shinto Katana and Dream On, Dreamer will hit your town in June 2011. Consider yourself warned.

This Must Be The Place – The Dead Leaves

The Dead Leaves are a band from Melbourne, Australia. While initially formed in 2009 to play and record lead-vocalist Matt Joe Gow’s solo work, The Dead Leaves (featuring guitarist Andrew Pollock, bassist Cameron Grindrod and drummer Joel Witenberg) have evolved far beyond a solo artist’s backing band. In January 2011, the band began recording their debut album at BJB Studios in Sydney, Australia, with producers Scott Horscroft (The Presets,

Birds of Tokyo,The Panics) and Eric J Dubowsky (Art vs Science, Weezer). The album is due for release in mid- 2011.

Avalanche City – “Love Love Love” – [YouTube Clip]

The story of Avalanche City begins with David Baxter in a house, alone, for hours and hours each day for months, slowly learning how to sing by process of scales, recording, and self critique.

Six months after taking the first steps towards singing, Baxter played his first solo show as Avalanche City.

Six months after the first show, one year after beginning the process of teaching himself how to sing, the first tracks were laid for Avalanche City’s debut album Our New Life Above The Ground.

Take Five with Wolverine – Interview

Life Music Media (LMM) caught up with Wolverine (W).

LMM: Tell us a little about Wolverine:

W – Scott Kent, also known as rapper Wolverine, adopted the persona of the famous Marvel comic creation, full of rage and the unbreakable metal adamantium, long before Hugh Jackman brought the character to movie screens. And while Jackman honed his craft at the prestigious
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Kent also spent years honing his in Perth, except he did it in cyphers, studios and live shows around the city. With his three solo albums, two mixtapes and incredible production output, players nationwide need adamantium speakers.

He has also performed at some of Australia’s premier live venues, and his intense live show has seen him share the stage with acts including Blackalicious, Method Man, Redman, Gza, Muggs, Foreign Legion, Brad Strut, Art of War, Downsyde, Hospice Crew, Bias B, The Funkoars and SBX.

It’s been a long road,But Wolverine is about to be unleashed into the national spotlight.

LMM: You album “Summertime Vibe” was released recently, tell us about your process of song writing?

W – As far as writing goes,i write in a free flowing way almost the same as freestyling, what ever pops into my head when i’m listening to a beat is what goes down,i rarely edit my lyrics,i tend to do it when recording too its normally first or second takes are the one’s on the record,it’s like jazz improvisation,if i make a mistake i dont like to edit it too much,i feel it gives a more human touch to the recording, its not all polished.

Matt Joe Gow talks about The Dead Leaves – Interview

How did this band album come about:

MJG – I had been working solo and also with ‘The Dead Leaves’ – on this new full band material. The band stuff had such an energy that the songs were just demanding all my attention. We ended up writing the album with the band in just 6 weeks. From there we got producers Scott Horscroft and Eric J Dubowsky on board, and at that point I realised it wasn’t just the energy of the

songs that was contagious, but actually in using all our influences in such a quick time span, and a fresh environment, we had managed to churn out some really unique and special songs.
