The Newcastle Panthers auditorium was full of young eager fans on Friday night ready to rock out with Reece Mastin.
Supporting Reece is three piece outfit “The Kin”. This band is solid and entertaining, the fact the drummer does not use sticks, they have no bass and the band opted to move the show to the floor which looked more like a religious chant than a concert only added to the night.
After a short break and with the audience abuzz, it was time for the headliner.
Enter Reece Mastin. Dressed in a Canadian hockey jumper Reece took to the stage with a 5 piece band including backup singer Mahalia Barnes. From the outset it was easy to see the talent that is Reece Mastin really shine through.
Opening with the track “Wolf in the Woods”, Mastin was very much at home with the crowd and also moving around the stage connecting with each band member.
During the third song of the night “Rock$tar” Mastin removed his jumper to reveal an impressive collection of ink on his arms. The entire set was tight and well worth listening to. Although there are similarities with other acts that have won talent shows, Mastin is different. He is a talent both on vocals and on guitar. You get the feeling he will be around for a while in this industry. It was an impressive ninety minute set and a gutsy move taking a tour on the road playing originals. Gauging the audience’s response, it was a sensible one.
Reece Mastin is well worth a look.
