Live Review | Periphery + Animals as Leaders @ Metro Theatre, Sydney – February 1, 2014

Review and photos by Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au – for Life Music Media
2014_PeripheryEven before Animals as Leaders take to the Metro stage, the venue is rapidly filling with excited, guitar-crazy punters. There are scores of Periphery shirts circulating and it’s almost impossible to find more than one of the same design – a testament to the band’s proactive approach to merchandise and self promotion.

Despite this, it’s clear that just as many of the assembled throng are here to see Tosin Abasi and co. perform their unique brand of instrumental, 8-string rock fusion. For what is really an odd instrumental line-up (both Abasi and fellow guitarist Javier Reyes playing 8-string Ibanez guitars and drummer Matt Garstka), the mix rings true and clear and the band do an excellent job of recreating tracks from their first two albums – announcing to the eager crowd that they’ve just finished work on album number three. Watching Abasi and Reyes navigate their large fret boards with such ease and confidence definitely makes you feel insignificant – Reyes’ incredible, simultaneous bass line and melody counterpoint work was particularly breathtaking.

Live Review: Steel Panther + Buckcherry + Fozzy @ Hordern Pavilion, Sydney – Saturday December 7, 2013

Words and Pics: Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au
Steel Panther have graced Australian shores numerous times over the last handful of years, each time moving to larger and larger stages around the country. However, when we first heard about the mock-hair metal band’s move to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion for their ‘Spread the Disease’ tour, we thought it might have been a little optimistic.

But arriving just in time to see first support act Fozzy take to the large Hordern stage, fronted by WWE wrestler Chris Jericho, with a line of people waiting to get into the venue that seemed to stretch on forever, it was obvious that filling the big shed would prove no problem tonight. With their southern-tinged brand of high energy rock ‘n’ metal, Fozzy easily whips the early punters into a frenzy of sweaty bodies despite the venue being half empty.

Live Review: Vans Warped Tour – Sydney – December 1, 2013

Review by Scott Singh
Arriving at Barangaroo the place was littered with many hopeful bodies ready to witness the return of the Vans Warped Tour to Australia. Though Barangaroo came off as a little small for such as huge festival, the venue was exceptionally prepared, with easy access to all amenities & better yet a bar area that had a great view of both the main stages.

The Summer Set welcomed everyone on the main stage, hyping the crowd with their energetic pop rock, preparing them for an enthralling day filled with both diverse and unique acts. Some veterans of Australian shows and others approaching our shores for the first time, the day was filled with opportunities to witness great acts and due to thoughtful timetabling, there was little chance of a clash between acts of the same genre.
