2015 is off to a raging start, as we see the release of The Pale Emperor, the latest LP from controversial media personality and shock rock pioneer, Marilyn Manson.
The album poses as a real return to form for Manson, the “Anti-Christ Superstar” going above and beyond previous efforts to deliver an album that fans familiar to his work will not only appreciate, but feel the energy and rawness that some felt has been missing for a lengthy period.
While The Pale Emperor see long time member and musical collaborator Twiggy Ramirez (Jeordie White) absent from the writing and recording procedure (for unknown reasons), we’re introduced to Tyler Bates as he is welcomed to the fold as Manson’s new creative partner.

The Drums are a young band from New York City who – like The Strokes before them – received a lot of hype very early on. But as their debut EP, Summertime! And now eponymous debut album have proved, this indie pop quartet are more about basking in the sunlit glow of a California beach than being inspired by yellow cabs or shopping on fifth avenue.
The guys ooze retro cool and like Peter Hook’s bass playing in Joy Division and New Order, their sound makes an immediate impact gaining your attention quickly with its old-yet-fresh style. But it seems this quality is also the group’s pitfall because when spread out over 12 songs, it becomes too repetitively simple and the buzz does tend to wear off a little. Like summer itself, you miss it when it’s gone but after enough humid 40+ degree days you can’t wait for winter or at the very least, autumn.

If indulging in French chic ever seemed like a good idea, The Powerhouse on the last day of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend certainly has a solution: the two-part musical program called So Frenchy So Chic and designed to bring the spirit of Montmartre to the River City. And so, as the French say, bienvenue – we’ve arrived to get our dose of Parisian charm.
At the Turbine Platform, the amount of hipsters in the crowd initially makes me think I’m on the set for The Bedroom Philosopher’s video – perhaps a similarly-themed follow-up to the notorious Northcote (So Hungover) – but we’re here to watch music rather that mingle with the trend-followers. For the first part of the evening, our host is the diminutive chanteuse Berry. Backed by two leather jacket-wearing, colourful-looking guitarists – one with long dreadlocks, |
