Q&A: Bart Thrupp

Bart Thrupp is a storyteller at heart. With his Folk/Pop melodies, Aussie charm and songs that everyone can relate to, he’s been captivating audiences across the country.

:: What track changed your life ::
I wrote a song called the Girl in the Fishbowl. That was the single that made it possible for me to quit my job. For that reason I would sing it every day for the rest of my life.

:: What is your favourite Album ::
Doolittle by The Pixies. Genius.

Siskin River. My friends on the road. Crazy Talented sisters.

:: When on tour, you can’t live without ::
My skateboard. It’s a great way to really see a town.

:: When you think of Australia, you think ::
Happiness. I’m so proud to live here and almost everyone I’ve met feels the same. Great food, great beer and the beautiful landscape makes for happy people.

:: Worst thing to happen to music is ::
Broken guitar strings. It’s such a pain in the arse when you play solo. But I guess if that’s the worst thing to happen to me, it’s not so bad.

:: Best thing about the current music industry ::
How connected we all are through the Internet. The output of creativity at this time is immense. I feel lucky to be part of it.

:: Biggest influence ::
John Butler is a role model to me. I admire his work ethic.

:: Childhood hero ::
John Fogarty was my first ever big concert. My Dad played his songs to me so much I can’t remember ever not knowing them.

:: When you were younger you wanted to be ::
Pretty much since I was given a guitar for my 4th birthday it has been my main interest. I guess Rock Star, or Brisbane Bronco.

:: Last album bought ::
Hot Sauce Committee Part II. Beastie Boys

:: First album you ever bought ::
I bought Spice Girls, Spice up your life. With my own money.

:: First concert you went to ::
Slim Dusty – Live in Roma, Queensland

:: Last concert you went to ::
Triple J’s one night stand. It rained like you would not believe.

:: Favourite current band ::
Hayden Calnin from Melbourne. He’s a terrific producer.

:: Favourite drink ::
Beer, from our keg at home.

:: Favourite book ::
The Wheel of Time series is Epic.

:: Favourite actor ::
Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter and Brad Pitt. Pretty much just the cast of Fight Club.

YouTube! I love the future.

:: The best boredom buster is ::
Rubik’s Cube. Turns out I collect them. I had no idea.

:: The best film you ever saw was ::
The Shining. That scared the shit out of me,

A Banana. They are sunshine and happiness.

Have a cup of green tea, without fail.
