Portishead
Bristol, England, UK
Beth Owens – Vocals
Adrian Utley – Guitar, bass, piano
Geoff Barrow – Drums, sampling

The band was formed in 1990 by Geoff Barrow though soon joined by Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. PORTISHEAD signed to Go! Beat Records and their first album, ‘Dummy’, was released on August 22, 1994. “Numb”,”Glory Box” and “Sour Times” were released as singles and the album went on to win the Mercury Music Prize in 1995.

A second album, ‘Portishead’, was released in 1997 differing in sound from Dummy, in that much of the music was composed and played by the band rather than sampled, and had a grainy, harsher sound. Three singles, “Cowboys”, “Over” and “All Mine” were released. Later the same year, the band performed a one-off show with a large string section at Roseland Ballroom, New York, which was subsequently released as a live album and video/DVD.
For the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo pursuits, until in February 2005 they appeared live for the first time in seven years at the Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

Around that time Barrow revealed that the band was in the process of writing its third album. In December 2007, PORTISHEAD curated the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, England, debuting new material that would feature on the new album entitled Third to be released in April 2008. A European tour followed as did a headline spot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

‘Third’ was made available on Last.fm the week before its release, the first time this had been done and attracted more than 300,000 listeners in under 24 hours.

In December 2009, Amnesty Intl released the song “Chase the Tear” donated by PORTISHEAD in its entirety to raise awareness for Human Rights Day.
