Is this Australia’s most haunted gaol?

Maitland Gaol’s foundation stone was laid in 1844 with the official opening and reception of the first prisoners occuring in 1848. Built of sandstone from Morpeth and Farley, it is considered to be the most intact country gaol in New South Wales and is the longest continuously operating correctional institution in Australia. Maitland Gaol closed in 1998.

During its period of operation, 16 men were executed at Maitland Gaol between 1843 and 1897. Executions were open to the public until 1861. Hangings had taken place at the main gates and the back corner of the Gaol.

Many people have spoken of the gaol being haunted. Reports include “heavy doors swinging by themselves with no wind present, unexplained clanging and creaking noises, eerie sensations in certain cells and sounds of men wispering.”

Maitland Gaol is located in East Maitland, New South Wales and has been turned into a museum and popular tourist attraction.

Open 7 days, Maitland Gaol offers visitors the opportunity to indulge in a world class self-guided audio tour. Additionally, themed-guided tours and torchlight tours by night are regularly available and are a great way to interpret this unique attraction. Only the brave can battle a group sleepover night.
