The Hoodoo Gurus will be playing at the 600 Sounds concert series as part of the 2011 Armor All Gold Coast 600 in October.

Hoodoo Gurus will perform at the 600 Sounds, at Broadwater Parklands, on October 22, along with Eskimo Joe, Masters Apprentices and Simple Minds .

Dave Faulkner (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) answers a few questions in the lead up to 600 Sounds.

LMM: What can the big crowd expect from your show at 600 Sounds on the Gold Coast this October?

Dave: The usual raucous tomfoolery – high energy, melodic rock and roll.

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 is known as the Gold Coast’s biggest party will you be enjoying all the Coast has to offer – including the hot racing action?

I hope so. I have close friends living there who have invited me to tag along with them to enjoy the madness. Of course I’ll be keeping myself pretty much under control until I get on stage.

The format of racing all day then rocking at night is unique – how does the 600 Sounds Rock ‘N’ Race Festival compare to other Festivals you play at?

Well, it sure smells different, that’s for sure. We played at the Adelaide race a few years ago so we have a bit of experience with these things. It’s probably most similar to a New Year’s Eve event: the audience has already been having a good time before we hit the stage. Our job is to keep them up there.

What are you like as a driver – do you think you could give the V8 Supercars guys a run for their money?

I often wonder how I can improve my driving efficiency and try to improve my braking and acceleration at corners. I always get the feeling that I am a long way off being a “smooth” driver.

What’s been your best (or most memorable) car experience?

Many years ago I rode in the passenger seat for some Hot Laps in a Super Tourer around Oran Park. I wasn’t sure if I’d be petrified…but I loved it. However, I think I gave the professional driver a few scares when we traded places for one lap.

What’s currently on your car stereo?

I have a 10-CD stacker so it’s always a real mix. Disc one right now is the first album by The Ramones – one of the greatest albums ever made.

Do you follow V8 Supercars? Is it Ford or Holden for you and who’s your favourite driver?

I’ve owned and enjoyed both Ford and Holden V8s so I’m gonna be diplomatic and sit on the manufacturer fence. I don’t have any particular driver as a favourite but, that said, I’ve always enjoyed watching Craig Lowndes go round.

If we went into your garage right now – what would we find?

An Aussie-made V8.

Race drivers have pre-race superstitions – like their favourite underwear or they always put on their race suit left leg first – what will you be doing before you hit the 600 Sounds stage in October?

Warming up my voice and grazing on the deli platter in our dressing room. We don’t indulge in group hugs in the Gurus.

A V8 Supercars driver wouldn’t succeed without a good relationship with his engineer, his team-mate and manager – is it fair to say that to be successful in the music industry it is much the same?

On concert days we always rely on our talented, dedicated road crew to make us comfortable on stage and keep things humming. Apart from that, it’s just us and our instruments against the world.
