Hannah Karydas debut single “Heavy”

Brisbane chanteuse HANNAH KARYDAS is swiftly becoming the name on everyone’s lips as the young and determined songstress who is currently forging her own path in music. Now, she is happy to announce the digital release of her debut single ‘HEAVY’.

Karydas, in many ways, mirrors the often-repeated trajectory that many young singer/songwriters take – is gifted an acoustic guitar at a very young age, begins writing songs when their teen-influences begin to wear thin and drawing a lot of inspiration from their parents’ record collection. What many of these don’t have, however, is the unique vision and drive Karydas possesses.

Karydas doesn’t call them “songs”, she refers to her material as “experiments” and this one features her friend Dan Parsons on drums and is produced by Melbourne-based musician and producer Robin Waters, formerly of seminal Brisbane outfit The Boat People. Along with previously-released “teaser” ‘Scrutinize’, this is just a small first taste from what will be a delicious debut EP.

As well as the song, Karydas has today released a self-made video: “I find bad quality intriguing, so what I did was I took the footage on a Canon 550d, then cut a shot sequence on my computer, then burnt it to a disc and played it through my TV, and then filmed the screen with my iPhone camera, and then put that footage back onto my computer for the final editing.”

Still only 18, Karydas is in rare possession of an old soul and a remarkable outlook on the ever-changing face of the music industry. She has already travelled the world, played all over the UK, and contributed vocals to US trip-hop outfit DJ Unwind. She has also attracted the attention of some fine industry luminaries such as Ian Haug (Powderfinger) and Robin Waters (The Boat People) to assist her in honing her own sound for her debut “experiments”.

In such a short time, she has played Fretfest, Woodford Folk Festival and London’s Spice of Life, a room once frequented by a young Cat Stevens. The Courier Mail has acknowledged her as one of their Best and Brightest and she went so far as to fake an English accent to receive airplay on BBC Radio Oxford, easily an insight to the unconventional sass she naturally exudes.
