Hailey Calvert – ‘Geography’ CD Launch @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 14 November 2012

Owning a sound described as vibrant and honest Folk/Blues, this Australian has been giving charismatic performances at home and around the world, and people have been taking notice.

Growing up in a small mining town could have been musically limiting, but lucky for Hailey; her dad was a fan of artists like Eric Clapton, Archie Roach and The Police. With time spent passively listening to such legends, a kid’s interest in singing could be sparked.

These days she’s building a following as a solo artist both in Australia and internationally. Recent tours to London, Ireland and America included a performance at New York’s famed music venue The Bitter End. This Greenwich Village favourite has previously seen shows by Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan.

Hailey recently found new fans after playing at the sold out 2012 Red Deer Festival, both as a solo performer and joining roots artist The Lyrical on stage.

“People are still asking me about Hailey Calvert… Where did she come from? And “Can you get her back next year!?” The latter is asked with desperation. Hailey is clearly an artist who makes an impression. She is as versatile as she is poetic. Hailey Calvert is one to watch.” -Bas Pelly, Red Deer Music Festival Organiser

Hailey’s debut E.P ‘Before the After’, an intimate, acoustic 8 track offering released in 2009 was much loved by fans and has since gone into its 3rd re-print.

Her second release ‘Geography’, to be launched on the 14th of November at The Zoo (Brisbane), is described as a personal postcard about home, faraway places and random feelings along the way. Defined musically as a folk album with a blues/country feel, the title comes from the fact that it was written in time spent between Scotland and Brisbane, but also features lyrics heavily inspired by her home town of Port Hedland, Western Australia.

‘Most of my songs are written about things I wouldn’t talk about face to face’ she says. ‘Oddly enough, I feel at home telling a room full of strangers. But that’s the way it is’.
