Live Review : Bluesfest Byron Bay 2022 – Day 3

By Wanda Hill

Well it’s not a dream, it is real and it’s happening again. After so long without festivals it doesn’t seem possible to see live music, five consecutive days in a row. Day three and everything is smooth. The parking and traffic situation has been sorted, the long queues are a thing of yesterday and everything just feels a bit more relaxed. Families are out with their kids, many having their first ever festival experience.

Album Review : THUNDER – Dopamine

Review by Peter Coates – www.facebook.com/InsideEdgePhotography

THUNDER – Dopamine
Double LP
Released – April 29th 2022 via BMG

Thunder may be the band who will just never give up – having been a fan from the earliest Terraplane days in the late 1980’s, and having been lucky enough to be present at the 10th Anniversary “farewell” tour in 1999, and the 20 Years & Out show at Hammersmith Odeon in 2009 (despite moving to Australia in 1998) and even getting to shoot the sold-out Hammersmith Apollo show in March 2015, we felt thrilled to get the band to Australia in 2017 for some intimate, but very raucous club shows.

Driving down to what was a hometown gig, I was full of excitement. Nobody parties like a country crowd, and boy, was this a long time coming. From the beginning, I must compliment the promoters’ commitment to bringing this event to the town; after two years, who would not be excited.

Bluesfest has been reborn in full glory after years of pandemic restrictions preventing the festival from going ahead. Live Review : Catherine Britt at Crown Hotel Wentworth – 1st April 2022

Reviewer David Jackson – shotz by jackson

Every Catherine Britt concert is a reminder of how she is one of country music’s finest vocalists. Hailing from Newcastle, Britt continued her around Australia Bush Pubs Tour at Wentworth on Friday night. Describing her tour as a labour of love inspired by the late Slim Dusty, Britt’s goal is to take her music to every corner of the country. Despite the Covid disruptions, she has managed to cover a considerable amount of it.  Having three golden guitars and nominated for three more from her latest venture, ‘Home Truths’ in Tamworth, in two weeks. Britt has a long history of playing and collaborating with some of music’s best, including Sir Elton John. Britt is an artist that crosses many music barriers from blues to roots to heartfelt country.

Cheap Trick

As I write this review, I cannot begin without acknowledging the determination and commitment of promoters for delivering this show to Australian shores. On what is the third attempt to bring this show to Australian shores it eventually went off like clockwork, providing ticket holders with a killer show on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Victoria.

FM – THIRTEEN
Released March 18th 2022
Frontiers Records

It is always a joy to get to hear a new FM album…….from the very first listen to that first FM record Indiscreet in 1986, having been a fan of Wildlife before then, and seeing them as the ultimate AOR support band over the next couple of years, including the epic Astoria show in 1987 with White Sister as the opening act.

THE KARMA EFFECT
Released – 18th March 2022
TMR Rock Records

Debut albums are always really interesting to review, and while this one only has 8 songs on it, it delivers a solid punch.  Closer to home for me is that the band are from my home town of Oxted in the UK, and are launching the album at one of my early watering holes – where us cocky 16 year olds could always get served!

EP Review : NAKED GYPSY QUEENS – Georgiana

NAKED GYPSY QUEENSGeorgiana EP
Released – Feb 11th
MASCOT LABEL GROUP

I heard the first release from this EP a few months ago and started raving about the band then – loving the vintage classic rock sound, heavily amplified blues, rock solid drums and a twin-guitar assault steeped in the likes of MC5, Free, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company – all brought up to date with some supercharged hooks that combines that true classic rock sound with a modern southern-rock swagger!

WILLE & THE BANDITS – WHEN THE WORLD STOOD STILL
Release: 28th Jan 2022
FAT TOAD RECORDS

Wille and the Bandits are a British-based band from Cornwall who play a mix of different genres spanning across the Blues, Rock, Roots and Folk rock styles, with a somewhat epic overall effect that channels the monstrous riffs of Led Zeppelin and the atmospheric warmth and depth of Pink Floyd, but all the time seeing the band push the boundaries of sound and rhythm to create a dynamic and unique sonic experience that should appeal to a broad range of classic and contemporary rock music fans.

London-based guitarist / vocalist Jack J Hutchinson has been one of the busiest musicians out there during the COVID-19 pandemic, doing live streams, special edition recordings, cover versions (including an epic version of War Pigs) and released his last studio album – Who Feeds The Wolf – in Oct 2019, along with a “Live” album Who Feeds The Lockdown in 2020.

I have been fortunate enough to get access to a whole host of albums in the past 18 months from the vibrant and booming rock scene in the UK in particular – whether NWOCR or otherwise, and as we roll into 2022, one of the first of the New Year releases has hit my in-box thanks to PK at TMR PR and Media.

Album Review : Devil Electric – Godless

DEVIL ELECTRICGodless
Released – 12/11/21

Melbourne fuzz-rock band Devil Electric have just released their highly anticipated new album, Godless. The record is a collection of ideas and experiences that can simply be described as “the next evolution” of their sound.  While keeping true to the band’s DNA, you’ll still find the heavy grooves and tones of 70’s inspired hard rock as Godless takes it one step further by peeling back to a rather more LoFi sound, a credit to producer Julian Schweitzer who worked with the band on the album.

Long running hard rockers L.A. Guns have announced the release of their new studio album, Checkered Past.  Written and recorded while the world was still in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic, the new studio album sees Tracii Guns, Phil Lewis, and company continuing with the darker lyrical tone of the preceding studio albums, The Devil You Know and The Missing Peace, while incorporating their classic rock influences into the mix.
