Tour News: The Tea Party Australian Tour – July 2012

Following their seven-year hiatus, the return to Australia of Canadian rockers THE TEA PARTY this July sees the band welcomed back with open arms.

Thanks to the overwhelming support by fans in Melbourne & Brisbane, the SOLD OUT sign is up at The Palais & The Tivoli, with the other states soon to follow suit. For those lucky folk in Melbourne however, The Tea Party are set to rock the southern state once more with a 2nd show on Sunday July 15 at The Hi-Fi. Stuart Chatwood says, “We asked Paul Dainty, the promoter, if he could accommodate a club show for us on this tour. While we love doing theatres, there’s something about rolling up your sleeves and playing a packed rock club. It speaks to the roots of this band, the immediacy, the excitement…. we wanted to give fans the opportunity to see us in a different environment as opposed to just doing a repeat of the first SOLD OUT show at the Palais”. Tickets for The Hi-Fi show go on sale Monday July 2.

Album Review: Barry Morgan – The Touch Of You

By Natalie Salvo
Barry Morgan’s a piano man but he’s not singing songs. The man who put the “organ” into “Morgan” is the alter ego of comedian, Stephen Teakle, who originally rose to fame on Spicks & Specks. On his debut album, The Touch Of You he pulls out all the stops (that’s an organ joke) with eight instrumental songs that sound as big as his wind-swept hairdo and as wide as his enthusiastic smile.

For most people the organ is typically associated with the sounds of church or hold music, like muzak. But here we get a retro guy from the city of churches (we’re told his shop is in Adelaide’s Sunnyside Mall) and some rather real sounding music. Consider that he couples warm and velvety tangos with some lounge-style grooves and a few sultry bossa novas, for a start.

Due to the large amount of rain over the last week and the upcoming forecast, we have made the hard discussion to postpone the festival and use our reschedule date, Saturday 25th August.

Charlie Mayfair – ‘Waste Me’ [Official Music Video]

‘Waste Me’ is a commanding slice of frantic-paced pop, once again featuring the fervent vocal of the group’s co-lead vocalist Hannah Shepherd and bolstered by the savvy production muscle of Brisbane’s Matt Redlich (Hungry Kids of Hungary, Ball Park Music, emma louise) – it certainly is Charlie Mayfair like you’ve never heard them before. Since the percussive ‘Tell Her’ laced national and community radio airwaves, the guitars have been turned up, the drums have become more feverish and the melodies have been sharpened to pop supremacy.

Geoffrey Rush in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum – 12 Weeks Only. Melbourne Only.

12 Weeks Only. Melbourne Only.
Her Majesty’s Theatre – From 20 October 2012

Academy®, Tony® and Emmy Award® winner Geoffrey Rush returns to his true home on stage in the absurdly funny musical A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, under the direction of Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert), this shamelessly retro musical pays homage to vintage vaudeville in an orgy of classic theatrical comedy, bawdy stage high jinks and sensational slapstick.

Geoffrey Rush bounds onto stage as the scheming slave Pseudolus, attempting to win his freedom from the henpecked Senex and his overbearing wife, Domina. When he learns his master’s dim-witted son has fallen in love with a virgin courtesan, he seizes the opportunity to secure his release.

The Owls

The Owls are a four-piece indie rock band from Newcastle, Australia. The Triple J Unearthed winners have been at it since 2008, touring with the likes of Gyroscope, The Living End, The Jezabels, Cloud Control and Phrase to name a few.

The Owls have taken the fast-paced elements of alternative rock, thrown in a liberal lashing of progressive southern dustiness and mixed in touches of ethereal dissonance to make a style all their own.

All Along the Watchtower
Mike Pachelli will help you learn all the parts to “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix. The song was written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1967, but Hendrix recorded it a year later. The recording of “All Along the Watchtower” began at Olympia Studios in London early 1968, but was finished in the summer of ’68 at the Record Plant in New York City. Hendrix wasn’t satisfied with what he had recorded in London, so in order to complete the song, many tracks had to be erased to make room for new takes.

Mike plays a Gibson Custom Les Paul Axcess Standard in this lesson.
