July 27, 1973 – The self-titled debut by the New York Dolls is released via Mercury Records. The album was produced by Todd Rundgren and spawns a number of glam/proto-punk classics including “Personality Crisis” and “Trash”.

1993 : Steve Vai’s third solo album, Sex & Religion, is issued. The release is credited simply to “Vai,” and is his first to feature traditional vocals, which were provided by a then-unknown Devin Townsend.

ILLY is heading out on the road for a huge national tour through August, September and October in the lead up to this third studio album, Bring It Back.

An overwhelming response to the tour announcement has seen 6 new shows added across Far North Queensland and Tasmania. And with Melbourne’s Corner Hotel already reaching capacity, a second Melbourne date has been announced for Wednesday 5 September. Tickets for all new shows are on sale now! Melbourne based A Dead Forest Index are brothers Adam & Sam Sherry, forming a minimalist two piece. Drawing on elements centred around rhythmic pulls and washes of vocals, the guitar & percussion clatters in and around measured structures, that can end abruptly, or drift off into tapping decrescendos where the harmony does find a resolution.

Antique brings to life a sound that is strikingly original and sincere. This music recalls and is homage to a by-gone era. Lyrically engulfing forms are highlighted by repetition, or isolated acapella moments, that mark this collection as a unique and important first release.

Yes this is a new album by Joe Jackson but it isn’t a new album of Joe Jackson songs. It is called The Duke and it’s a cover album of fifteen Duke Ellington songs reinterpreted into a medley of ten tracks.

Duke who? I hear you say. Well Duke Ellington (1889-1974) was an American composer, often associated with Jazz music but who wrote for every musical genre and has been considered by many as ‘beyond category’. He was a very prolific and talented composer and is still a huge influence on many current musicians and is, of course, a huge influence Joe Jackson himself.

It’s been a pretty hectic few years for 5-piece Brisbane indie-rockers Blonde On Blonde. With the release of their sophomore EP ‘Tease’ in February 2010 and a ball-park amount of support, they’ve set themselves up for a whirlwind year. So far – a road trip over to Las Angeles for MUSEXPO at the end of May and July saw 4 massive support slots alongside renowned Australian rockers, INXS. They now have their vocals chords warm and hands anxious as they head into the studio to record their forthcoming EP. Filmed in an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Oh Mercy unveil the video of their new single ‘Drums’, from their forthcoming ‘Deep Heat’ album set for release August 24.

Alexander Gow on ‘Drums’, “This is a tale of cautionary romance. Musically it came out of a heavy (and continuing) Jorge Ben binge. It started off as a take on the story of ‘Hero & Leander’. Lovers living on either side of a strait called ‘Hellespont’. Leander was a champion swimmer. I finished it and then inverted some on the sentiment. For fun.”
