Hailey Calvert – ‘Geography’ CD Launch @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 14 November 2012

Owning a sound described as vibrant and honest Folk/Blues, this Australian has been giving charismatic performances at home and around the world, and people have been taking notice.

Growing up in a small mining town could have been musically limiting, but lucky for Hailey; her dad was a fan of artists like Eric Clapton, Archie Roach and The Police. With time spent passively listening to such legends, a kid’s interest in singing could be sparked.

Live Review: Cannibal Corpse, Psycroptic, Disentomb, Entrails Eradicated @ Metro Theatre, Sydney – 6 October 2012

Australian death metal fans generally aren’t quite as lucky when it comes to high-profile gigs like their brethren who enjoy less-heavy strains of metal. You could probably blame the state of the music industry for the lack of international death artists all the way over here to our little patch of dirt in the middle of nowhere.

Therefore it’s a testament to the talent, determination and endless road miles put in by death metal legends Cannibal Corpse that Aussie fans have had the luxury of seeing the band live on our shores no less than three times in the last 10 years. However, despite the surprising regularity with which we have been able to enjoy Cannibal Corpse’s punishing live show, tonight’s gig at Sydney’s iconic Metro Theatre is no less special for it. The fact that the band is being supported by three Australian death metal acts tonight just adds to the impact.

Live Review – Clave Contra Clave 2012 – The Melbourne Pavilion, 13 October 2012

Written by Jose Eduardo Cruz
Last week in Brisbane the sleeping giant was awakened and it began to walk and feel its surroundings. This week in Melbourne that giant danced all night and drew a line across the sand to identify the level which must be reached in order to earn the title of Clave Contra Clave 2012 winners.

Competing on the night were Bahia, Quarter St. Orquesta, Perle Conche, Das Chos, Peligro and San Lazaro. A healthy crowd witnessed all bands put on an exceptional event. This week the panel of judges was once again filled with Australian music royalty. Cesar Rodriguez (guitarist from Blue King Brown) also lent his support to the national competition by forming part of an expert judging panel.

Why do people come from all the lands to this fine island, you ask? Thatʼd be for its mystical pyramid-shaped rock formation (magical sea castle to some) and the fresh seaside views – plus itʼs spacious, green, breezy and sunny. HARVEST: Santigold and Crazy P team up for only Australian sideshows

The term ‘burst onto the scene’ is an overused cliché that could be applied to Santigold’s appearance post release of her debut album Santogold, but it would be more precise to say, that the Philadelphian force simply strolled on in and without even a sideways glance at the concierge, took up residence in the penthouse.

Santi’s Santogold was released in 2008 and raised the online community to fever pitch – she was a tiger amongst the pigeons. Blogs all over the world rippled with excitement at the confidence with which she took dub, rock, new wave, punk and yes, pop to a place of alchemy where they all formed something new, golden and aggressive.
