Live Review – Lindsey Stirling @ Brisbane Powerhouse – August 24, 2013

Review and photos by Stephen Goodwin
There’s a long wait for rock-violinist Lindsey Stirling this evening at The Powerhouse — at least 15 minutes long, to be honest. For a touch over an hour, Kiwi DJ 1000 Ninjas labours manfully from a cubbyhole spot almost side-of-stage. In a club environment his chill-out grooves and odd samples would probably win a better reception, but this crowd is expecting action and movement, and that’s something beyond 1000 Ninjas’ scritchy-glitchy stillness tonight.

By contrast, Stirling is all movement. Over the course of an hour and twenty minutes she barely halts — whirling, twirling, jumping and pirouetting. Formal ballet it isn’t, still Stirling’s show is as much an act of dance as it is a musical performance. All with a carbon-fibre violin jammed under her left ear. And the capacity crowd — a peculiar mixture of young and old; gamers and geeks reflective of the diversity of her fanbase — laps it up.

Deep Sea Arcade Announce Welcome Home & “Black Cat” Single Tour

DEEP SEA ARCADE have spent the best part of the last year living in the UK, soaking up the culture and imparting some of their own as they lay down their sophomore record, quickly creating the same buzz in their temporary home of London which lead to them being one of Sydney’s most respected indie acts.

The new single ‘Black Cat’ is the first from the band’s new album (slated for early 2014), the follow-up to their 2012 debut Outlands, the global success of which led to the band’s extended sojourn to the UK. Recorded and mixed by Dan Grech-Margueray (Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines, Howling Bells, The Kooks), the band will return to Australia to celebrate Black Cat’s release with a string of Australian capital city shows in September and October.

Tour News: Nile Rodgers and CHIC Australian Tour – December 2013

Nile Rodgers and Chic have announced they will be playing a series of national dates to bring their feel-good, fun-time hit parade to venues across the country.

By the time CHIC appeared in the late ’70s, they bucked the trend by stripping disco’s sound down to its basic elements; their funky, stylish grooves had an organic sense of interplay that was missing from many of their overproduced competitors.

CHIC’s sound was anchored by the scratchy, James Brown-style rhythm guitar of Nile Rodgers and those indelible, widely imitated (sometimes outright stolen) bass lines; as producers, they used keyboard and string embellishments economically, which kept the emphasis on rhythm.

DAN SULTAN announces “Back To Basics” solo tour + supporting Bruce Springsteen on two shows

After strong demand from his league of dedicated fans, and following two sold-out shows in his hometown of Melbourne earlier this year, Dan Sultan is happy to announce a national tour for his Back To Basics solo show. It will give his fans the opportunity to hear his inspired collection of new material in its rawest form, played live in a stripped-back and intimate environment.

As well as his national headline tour, Dan Sultan has been announced as special guest for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2014 Melbourne show alongside reformed Australian rock & roll legends Hunters and Collectors and the Hunter Valley show alongside The Rubens.

It will be a change of scenery for Sultan, who has been busy recording his third studio album, due for release in the first half of 2014. This time, he has teamed up with acclaimed producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Of Monsters and Men, Tom Waits, Norah Jones, The Editors, Modest Mouse) in the legendary music town of Nashville.
