KIRK FLETCHER – HOLD ON
Another new name to me from the big wide world of the blues, and another cracking example of the quality of blues guitarists out there today – with a handful of solo albums behind him, as well as three years in The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kirk Fletcher has one of the more soulful voices, twinned with a guitar style that brings to mind the likes of Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Gary Clarke Jr and Eric Gales to name just a few!

It is not that often that we get the chance to see a cult Canadian country-rock band in Australia, so when they arrange a couple of random sideshows after their Winton Way Out West appearance, it seemed sensible to get to see one of them at least – The Road Hammers were over here a few years ago for CMC Rocks and left a pretty hot reputation behind.

Brad Cox, fresh from the Snowy Mountains of NSW was a late addition to this bill, and turned up with two of his band to give the crowd a taste of his recent album release from a three piece guitar / mandolin ensemble. Brad is a big man with a huge voice, much in mould of Luke Combs, but with the Australian twist of humour and country that will set him apart. We got a handful of songs from the album, including Too Drunk to Drive and Somewhere Like Cheyenne, and I am certainly looking forward to catch him again with the full band before long.

Little Steven and the Disciples Of Soul at Enmore Theatre, Sydney – 25 April 2019
Review and photos by Peter Coates – www.facebook.com/InsideEdgePhotography

I was probably expecting a more Springsteen-derived set based on my less than comprehensive knowledge of the Little Steven back-catalogue – knowing the songwriting link with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes which also sits within that Jersey Shore guitar-based soulful blues/rock arena.

Introducing Nashville at The Factory Theatre, Sydney – 21st March 2019
A four-artist bill featuring some of North America’s most exciting established and up-and-coming artists – Brandy Clark, Devin Dawson, Lindsay Ell and Tenille Townes have embarked on a unique tour following their CMC Rocks appearances, in a totally different style and format to what many Country Music fans would be used to. Designed to introduce current artists from Nashville to music fans around the world, this two-hour seated show presented the artists on stage together, in a rare stripped-back environment, mirroring a quintessential Nashville “writers round”, we saw the four, all of whom are on their first trip Down Under, take turns to introduce their songs, sharing the stories behind the tracks, along with some fascinating personal life and career experiences.

Ashley McBryde is on her first trip Down Under, appearing at CMC Rocks this weekend, and her band kicked off with a solid blues rock riff and the lady herself wandered out guitar, slung low and kicked into the opening song Livin’ Next to Leroy.

British blues rock guitarist Kris Barras is just winding up a UK club tour, promoting his second album The Divine And Dirty, playing to a run of sold out venues around the country, including The Garage in North London, and The Haunt in Brighton, where we caught up with him for a quick chat before the show there.

Nickelback have the big stage set and great lights of the stadium rock band they now are, and open up with Feed The Machine, followed by Woke Up this Morning and while we are packing up the cameras, the more laid back hit of Photograph. An extra guitarist appears for the huge crowd singalong of Far Away to fill out the acoustic depth, and keeps popping up on guitar and keys through the set. And the light show continues to impress.
