Sam Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt sign on for Brisbane International

Australian favourites Samantha Stosur (Qld) and Lleyton Hewitt (SA) have today confirmed that they will start their 2013 season in Queensland at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp.

World No.9 Stosur is looking forward to playing in-front of her home crowd for the fourth time.

“It’s always fun to play at home. You don’t get many opportunities to play in your home country and the state that you’ve grown up in,” said Stosur, who captured the hearts of Australians last year when she defeated Serena Williams to win the 2011 US Open, her first Grand Slam singles title.

HARVEST: Santigold and Crazy P team up for only Australian sideshows

The term ‘burst onto the scene’ is an overused cliché that could be applied to Santigold’s appearance post release of her debut album Santogold, but it would be more precise to say, that the Philadelphian force simply strolled on in and without even a sideways glance at the concierge, took up residence in the penthouse.

Santi’s Santogold was released in 2008 and raised the online community to fever pitch – she was a tiger amongst the pigeons. Blogs all over the world rippled with excitement at the confidence with which she took dub, rock, new wave, punk and yes, pop to a place of alchemy where they all formed something new, golden and aggressive.

Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1,000 – Wrap-Up

Bathurst certainly lived up to its reputation as Australia’s greatest race with Jamie Whincup and David Reynolds battling to the chequered flag in a classic Holden versus Ford battle on Mt Panorama.

Over the last 15 laps of the 161-lap race, Whincup and Reynolds raced nose to tail as Reynolds tried everything to pass Whincup. On a few occasions he almost drew level, their battle captivating the record crowd with some of the hardest, and most entertaining racing seen in the 50-year history of the race.

Whincup, (Holden) held off Reynolds (Ford) to win by .3 second after 1,000 kilometres of intense racing with Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes finishing 3rd.

Rick and Todd Kelly showed impressive speed, getting the two Jack Daniel’s Racing Commodores well into the top ten on several occasions throughout the day.

Review: Stuart Blythe

Sex, sing-alongs, comedy, catchy tunes and balls out fun! Yep, STEEL PANTHER has it all.
Their brand of tongue-in-cheek rock is an experience to behold and last night, playing to a sold out Brisbane crowd was testament to just that.

As Michael Starr, Satchel, Lexxi Foxx and Stix Zadinia take to the stage, the crowd roars out cheers and the night blasts off with ‘Supersonic Sex Machine’, ‘Tomorrow Night’ and ‘Fat Girl’. Steel Panther, milking the crowd for all it’s got, and the crowd more than happy to oblige.

BECK’s One and Only Harvest Festival Sideshow

BECK
ONLY AUSTRALIAN SIDESHOW

BECK Hansen is at that point in his career where encapsulating all that he’s done and all that he is about, in a few paragraphs, feels both impossible and somewhat irresponsible. But here goes…

In his teens, Beck spent several years on a musical pilgrimage through Europe and into New York’s ‘anti-folk’ scene, before returning to LA where he began releasing his first studio albums. In 1994, at just 24 years old, Beck released ‘Loser’ one of the catchiest, most off-kilter tracks of the decade. It made him famous, ridiculously so but like other great artists before him, it would only be the accumulation of decades of different projects that would enable the true enormity of Beck’s talents to be seen.

Live Review: The Amity Affliction, The Ghost Inside, Architects, Buried in Verona @ The Big Top, Luna Park – 29 September 2012

Words and Pics: www.hoskingindustries.com.au

Tonight’s all-ages gig meant it was an early start for punters hoping to check out all four bands playing The Big Top at Sydney’s Luna Park. While the eager crowd wrapped its way around the Luna Park grounds in serpentine fashion, patiently waiting for the doors to open, it seems as though most of the other press outlets missed the memo on playing times, with the photo pit looking rather barren for opening act, Buried in Verona.

Playing to a half-full venue, the Sydney sextet appeared a more polished, confident band than when this reviewer last caught them supporting Sweden’s Soilwork at the Manning Bar at the tail end of 2010. They’re plagued by the usual opening-act muddy mix, which is exacerbated by the three-guitar attack that’s the fashion these days. And while the clean vocals (courtesy guitarist Richie Newman) have improved a lot, every time singer Brett Anderson tries to sing along it all falls apart.
