Big Day Out 2012 – Melbourne – 29th January 2012 | REVIEW

For many, it was time to question the event’s continued validity in the now flooded one day festival market. That questioning, undoubtedly, led the co-founders to part ways and this year’s event to succumb to circumstance and dramatically downsize. And with recent news that the Auckland leg was no more after this year, it’s pertinent to reflect upon what, exactly, the BDO brand has brought to the rock festival table over its two decades.

What are rock festivals all about these days?

Rock festivals are still about discovering.
Early in the baking summer’s day, Melbourne’s BONJAH held the fort at the aptly-named Hot Produce stage. Now with a rockier edge compared to its urban-roots inflected past, the five-piece oozes charisma, with front-man Glenn Mossop’s chiseled looks and studied moves adding to his extraordinary brooding, honey-dipped drawl. A kicker of Portishead’s “Teardrop” adds icing to the cake and pegs this performance as a great way to ease in to the steamy afternoon.

BLUESFEST SIDESHOW: Blues Guitarist BUDDY GUY with special guest JONNY LANG

There are great guitarists … superstar guitarists … legendary guitarists… and then there is BUDDY GUY.

An all-time favourite and an absolute legend! And if this wasn’t enough Buddy’s special guest for two very special shows in Melbourne & Sydney is guitar virtuoso JONNY LANG.

“BUDDY GUY was for me… what Elvis was for others”, said Eric Clapton… and he wasn’t alone in following his ‘mentor’“BUDDY GUY plays from a place that I’ve never heard anyone play” – Stevie Ray Vaughan

(Hed) P.E. @ The Hi-Fi, Brisbane – 2nd February 2012 | Live Review

Review by Kenada Quinlan
M.C.U.D (Hed’s Jahred Gomes) stops to briefly meet and greet fans at the back of the line before piling into a minivan and fleeing the scene, permitting the venue doors to slide open.

Kid Crusher’s loyal horror masked comrade drops dirty bass under his allegedly shocking lyrics. Spitting rhymes and perfected deep throated howls cause the few ‘in the know’ to bounce to his semi-interesting blend of rap and vinyl induced metal noise.

With the venue filling steadily, Sydney’s RECOIL takes the stage and unleashes their brand of fierce double kick driven metal. Musicianship is precise, complex guitar work in order. Stunning vocals propel from centre stage, refreshing the senses. Giving away a free band Tee encourages further movement in the front row, while nods of endearment multiply during their all too short but sweet residency.

Tour News: August Burns Red & Blessthefall Australian Tour – April 2012

When August Burns Red unleashed their 2009 breakout album, Constellations, they became a band that could no longer be ignored. They debuted in the Top 25, co-headlined the AP Tour, headlined Warped Tour and connected fiercely with a colossal legion of fans. Suddenly the Pennsylvania-based metalcore giants have found themselves in some rather unexpected places. From the cover of Alternative Press to Fox’s American Dad, from the sands of Dubai to Japan to South America.

Having briefly stopped by in 2010 to say G’Day to Aussie fans as part of the No Sleep Til tour, August Burns Red are now set to grace our shores once more in support of their fourth full-length album Leveler. Revolver Magazine concluded that the release set the standard for their entire scene in 2011, so it’s only fitting then, that the band brings some of the genre’s finest live bands along for the ride on their mammoth Australian tour.

Album Review: Asking Alexandria – Stepped Up And Scratched

Review by Billy Geary
Remix albums for any band, be it a full blown electronic act or a big metal band are risky business. Rarely is a remix album put together that actually improves a bands sound or even adds a worthwhile extra dimension to the group’s music. In fact, with the exception of a couple of select releaseas (such as Gotye’s stunning Mixed Blood), most remix albums follow the general formula where there are a couple of great tracks, a couple of terrible tracks and a whole bunch of filler.

Much maligned metalcore band Asking Alexandria are the latest of a growing trend of metal bands going down the remix path, with a collection of remixes of tracks taken from their two albums to date. Unsurprisingly, Stepped Up and Scratched can be summarised in much the same way as any other remix album; there’s a couple of impressive interpretations mixed in with plenty of filler.

Ani Difranco – Which Side Are You On? | Album Review

– By Helen Brown
One woman, one guitar and a whole lot of attitude. “F*ck you, and your untouchable face” unwittingly became a feminist catch cry of the mid 90s, and the lady who imparted these empowering words, Ani Difranco, is back with Which Side Are You On? after a three year break from recording. Drawing influences and support from many talented Louisianan musicians, each song is a story unto itself.

‘Splinter’ is one of the stronger tracks and is about keeping the balance between naturism and materialism, and not letting ourselves become consumed by living too comfortably: “Sweat in the summer, shiver in the winter / just enough to know you’re alive.” With an animated guitar and booming timpani, Difranco sounds down to earth as though she is practicing or experimenting in a home made recording studio. She also weaves medieval renaissance notes and cool little riffs into Which Side Are You On?, all the while maintaining clever lyrics and frantic sing-song melodies.

Machine Head – Soundwave 2012 Sideshows Announced!

Forget what you know about heavy metal. Masters of their craft, MACHINE HEAD have been redefining the genre for the better part of 15 years since their breakthrough classic ‘ Burn My Eyes’ blazed a path for all to follow.

In 2007 they created a masterpiece of modern metal, ‘The Blackening’ and delivered the knockout blow to the rest of the metal world. Critics and fans alike agreed that this was one of the purest, finest, most powerful expressions of modern heavy metal released.

Four years since the epic success of “The Blackening”, the MACHINE HEAD studio album “Unto The Locust” was released in June this year. It is simply their most innovative and ambitious offering to date displaying punishing brutality with Metal Hammer declaring ‘the album is a storm of complex arrangements and riffs, compiled by musicians who have gained absolute command of their vision. It’s breathtaking work.”
