One of six children raised in a rigidly devout Jehovah’s Witness family, Tim Hulsman’s father was a respected elder in that community, responsible for counselling and advising “the flock” and for ex-communicating members who were deemed to be straying or worse, ‘unrepentant sinners’. Any music other than hymns and religious music was heavily regulated in the Hulsman home and Tim’s parent’s deeply-held belief was that music “will lead you astray.”

With the release of new single ‘December’ from her debut album, ‘Fledgling’, and a national tour about to kick off, Julia Henning took time out to answer a few questions for Life Music Media.

: What track changed your life ::

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. This is the song that introduced me to his lyrics. It is such a haunting and powerful song, with so much feeling placed in each word. Leonard Cohen has become one of my greatest inspirations and helped me to see songwriting as more of a craft to be honed than something I just did for fun.

The Vines – “Metal Zone” (Official Video)

vinesIt’s an homage to the bands favourite distortion pedal plus a twisted, dark, raunchy, punk rock song about relationships. It arrives as the first single from The Vines’ forthcoming album “Wicked Nature”.

Like the guitar pedal namesake, there is a lot of psychotically soft-loud-soft dynamics happening in this new tune. “Metal Zone” is a straight up nightmare of freewheeling solos and screams from frontman Craig Nicholls, who jumps out of the song right before there is any time to get too familiar.
