Spiritual. Transcendental. Spellbinding. Miraculous. That’s the best way to describe Anathema’s first Sydney concert in their 25-year history. There’s electricity in the air and from the first bars of Untouchable Part 1, everyone can feel it – including the band themselves who are visibly stoked at the reception.
None of Anathema’s subtlety is lost in the live arena, with all of the fragility of the quiet sections and all of the energy and fire of the loud parts gloriously reproduced through the PA and into every set of ears in the Metro’s full-house. And the band plays a good cross section of their tracks, including a smattering of tunes from their new album, ‘Distant Satellites’.
From the incredible musicianship to the watertight vocal harmonies, Anathema sends the audience into rapture and the applause is deafening. It doesn’t get much better than this and we better not have to wait another 25 years to enjoy the experience again.
What right does one family have to so much talent, anyway?!
