Astrid & The Asteroids to Launch New EP in Brisbane on October 27

Life, death, love, Dr Seuss, inner city hipsters – they’re just some of the themes behind what could easily be one of the most fascinating releases of the year as Brisbane’s ASTRID & THE ASTEROIDS prepare to launch their new self-titled EP.

The surprise packet of the local music scene, the band has spent the past 12 months carving out an enviable reputation thanks to their blend of pop, soul, jazz and front woman Astrid Jorgenson’s stunning vocal range.

Live, they have become a must-see act – but the release of this their second EP showcases not only the band’s remarkable playing, but a honed sense of creative identity all to their own. The EP release has been led by the two wildly diverse singles ‘West End’ and ‘Autopsy’ – both of which have attracted plenty of attention at radio and online.

“West End is dedicated to all our friends in the ‘4101’. The best ratio of ’boutique beers’ to ‘bare feet’ in Brisbane,” Astrid explains. “Whereas Autopsy tells the story of sniper Charles Whitman whose undiagnosed brain tumour may have played a part in his suicidal killing spree.”

“Old Friend…that’s a song about the time and place for everything in life and inspired by the wisdom of Doctor Seuss: ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened’.”

The EP was produced with help from the supremely talented production trio of Magoo (mixing on Autopsy), Jeff Lovejoy (mixing) and Jake Walsh (producer/engineer), and was recorded after the band collected the coveted Billy Thorpe Scholarship (2012) that supports emerging Queensland talent.

“We would like to thank Arts Queensland, Q Music, and Billy Thorpe, his legacy, and his family,” Astrid says. “Without the gift of the 2012 Billy Thorpe Scholarship, this EP would not have been possible. The financial support it gave us allowed us to focus on putting our heart and soul into our music, without the mind-numbing worry of money. For entrusting us with this honour, we are eternally grateful.”

The ASTRID & THE ASTEROIDS EP will be released online everywhere through SUGARRUSH Music this month, with the band hitting the road for a run of dates to celebrate its release including the launch in their home town…
