Review: Jose Eduardo Cruz.

So once again Regurgitator had decided to hit the road for a run of shows. I have to confess that I grew up with this band; all through high school “the gurge” always made the playing list at our parties. So to see them live again was quite nostalgic for it brought back many memories of years gone by. DJ Krush had been brought along for the ride. For the second time this week I saw DJ Krush warming up a crowd. I managed to see him on Friday at Valentino Up Late while I looked at art pieces and thought “hmmm that sounds pretty good can’t wait to hear him play his set tomorrow”. I always found it fascinating that one person can control the energy of an entire room. The beginning of his set seemed a bit messy and you could tell by the response in the crowd. It appeared as if everyone was wondering around aimlessly trying to figure out what was being played on the stage.

Once he warmed up though, he took control of the punters and only a handful remained at the bar. With a heavy bass beat as a backdrop he skilfully went through over an hour set to deliver us to Regurgitator. It took a little concentration, but DJ Krush set was an interesting warm up act.

The last time I saw Regurgitator I had just started uni and Festival Hall was still standing. 1998 was a long time ago and I was interested to see if they had changed at all. I have to say NO nothing has changed with one of Brisbane’s greatest bands. These guys can remain dormant for months on end and still managed to gather a strong crowd. I have to say that tonight’s turn out, considering that it’s been a while since they promoted any material was very very impressive.

The opening was Star Wars inspired with the band playing the theme and a brief history of the band appearing as a back drop. These guys have lost nothing of their youthful energy or their quirkiness. It was such a pleasure to hear all their great hits still played with the same intensity as if it was 1998!! Punk rock, pop rock all types of rock made it into the set. I really don’t know where Quan gets his ideas for songs!!!

A lot of today’s band could learn a thing or two about continuity and specially originality from Regurgitator. It is for this reason that Brisbane, even after so many years still loves them.

Here is hoping they continue to power on.
