Live Review: Slayer, Anthrax & Kingdom of Sorrow @ Big Top – Luna Park, Sydney – 25 February 2013
Review and photos by Ben Hosking
Ahh, the annual Soundwave cavalcade. A time for sunburn, aching legs, aching livers and severe tinnitus. For those with average bank accounts, Soundwave is usually a choice between the main festival and the many and varied accompanying ‘Sidewave’ shows.
For some, the choice to purchase tickets to a Sidewave is more about being able to see their favourite bands in a more intimate environment with a few thousand other die-hards instead of tens of thousands. We’re left in no doubt tonight that many of the punters filling Luna Park’s Bog Top in Sydney fall squarely into the third category: those who feel compelled to spend up and see their favourite band/s in both arenas. Tonight’s Sidewave, starring Slayer, Anthrax and Kingdom of Sorrow is truly an exceptional line up of talent for one intimate venue and it comes as no surprise to find a long line of black-clad dudes stretching out past the big open mouth of the amusement park.

THE RUBENS sell out Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane – 2nd shows announced!
** UPDATE **
Ivy League have confirmed that Menangle wunderkinds THE RUBENS have SOLD OUT the Forum Theatre, Enmore Theatre and The Tivoli shows on their Never Be The Same tour and second shows for each of these venues are on sale NOW.
This is a massive achievement and welcome news for the boys, who return home after a month long stint in Europe and the US, playing debut headline shows and SXSW.
Representing the exciting new breed of artists to come out of our fair land at their SXSW showcases, it wasn’t long before the buzz surrounding the band caught up internationally, with The New York Times describing their sound as “Coldplay sensibility and Radiohead edginess” going on to say “I predict that The Rubens will not be a baby band for long”.

Live Review: My Bloody Valentine @ The Palace Theatre, Melbourne – 22 February 2013
Review by Billy Geary
Walking through The Palace’s somewhat decrepit door way from the hustle and bustle of Bourke Street into the sizable band room on Friday night carried with it a considerable amount of anticipation and also trepidation. Anticipation was high given the show marked My Bloody Valentine’s long awaited return to Australian shores. Subsequently, there was a degree of trepidation in the lead up, rooted in the question of whether My Bloody Valentine would truly be able to live up to their reputation as a live band that has inflated in their absence.

Review by Michelle O’Rance
The Hi-Fi in Brisbane has filled up early in preparation for the first of the Brisbane sidewaves ahead of the festival on the weekend.
All attention quickly turned to the stage as local band Malakyte launched into their opening track ‘Zero Hour’ and the speed and ferocity of the music roars out over the crowd enticing everyone to bang their heads to their balls-out brand of pure thrash metal.
